Buffs Close Out Regular Season at Air Force

May 3, 2024

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Colorado men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Air Force Twilight Open here at the Cadet Outdoor Track Complex on Friday to put an end to the Buffaloes' regular season.

With the Pac-12 Championships right around the corner, the Buffs put together a solid day of marks as the outdoor season continues to wind down. Colorado was led by great performances from Matt Ward and Amanda Opp.

Coming off of a record-breaking mark in the hammer throw this past weekend, Ward continued his success at the Air Force Academy today. He placed second in the discus and third in the hammer to lead all Buffs in both events. Other CU athletes to compete in those events were Lars Atkinson, Lucas Williams and Ames Newman.

Colorado also saw some action in the men's javelin throw. Nicholas Bianco, who competed unattached, finished third in the event while Gustavo Alfonso finished fourth with a toss of 50.62 meters. Additionally, Bianco set a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.39.

On the women's side, Opp earned the only first-place finish of the day for the Buffs, taking the top spot out of 10 participants in the hammer throw. She then managed a fourth-place finish in the discus with a mark of 43.75m.

The Buffs also fared well in the women's shot put, owning two of the top three distances. Lauren Whyrick finished second with a toss of 13.31m while Meghan Whyrick finished third with 12.65m.

Next, the Buffs will have almost a week of preparation and rest ahead of the Pac-12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This will be the final Pac-12 Championships as the conference has scattered throughout the course of the past year. While it is the last go around for the Pac-12, it is the first time the Buffs will have hosted the championships.

Action will start on Friday, May 10 at Potts Field with the final day of competition being Sunday, May 12.
