Moran Repeats as Pac-12 Hammer Champ

May 10, 2024

EUGENE, Ore. – For a second-consecutive season, Shelby Moran is the Pac-12 champion in the hammer throw. Through four events scored, the Women of Oregon are tied for fourth in the team standings with 17 points. On the men's side, the Ducks scored six points on day one of the conference meet.

Collectively, Oregon also secured eight qualifiers—five women, three men—in Friday's prelims.

Moran is the sixth woman in conference history to win back-to-back titles in the hammer. In the second round, the Sherwood, Ore., native got the implement out to a day's best of 68.80m/225-8 and beat the field by more than eight feet. Four of her five legal throws landed beyond 68 meters with all five marks good enough for the victory. Moran is also entered in Sunday's discus.

The Ducks' first points of the weekend came from Kohana Nakato in the women's javelin. She recorded a day's best of 50.24m/164-10 to move from sixth to fifth on her final attempt of the day, securing four points for the UO women. Nakato matched her placing from a season ago, and is now a three-time Pac-12 scorer—all top five—in her career.

For the UO men, Gavin Korkeakoski and Asher Krauel finished fifth and seventh, respectively, collecting six points in the javelin. Korkeakoski saved his best for the final round, posting a mark of 62.71m/205-9 to move from eighth to fifth overall. Krauel tallied a season best of 61.55m/201-11, matching his Pac-12 finish from 2022.

In the final event of the day, Anika Thompson was sixth in the 10,000 meters to secure three points for the women's team total. She posted a time of 35:19.28 in her Pac-12 Championships debut. Thompson is also entered in Sunday's 5,000 meters, the final individual event of the weekend.

Taylor Chocek will take a nine-point lead into day two of the heptathlon, currently holding a slim edge over Avery McMullen of Colorado. Chocek has 3,543 points through four events with the help of a 100 hurdles PB (13.58) to start the day. The Oregon women occupy three of the top four spots with Colleen Uzoekwe and Annika Williams in third and fourth, respectively.

The heptathlon resumes Saturday at 12:00 p.m. (PT) with the long jump. Gianna Bullock, the fourth UO woman in the field, is just outside of scoring position in ninth place after day one.

In the decathlon, Rafael Raap and Arthur Katahdin sit in third and sixth place, respectively, through the first five events. Raap carded a collegiate outdoor best of 7.22m/23-8.25 in the long jump on his way to 3,889 points Friday. Katahdin, with the help of a personal best 12.93m/42-5.25 in the shot put, notched a day-one score of 3,598 points.

The 110-meter hurdles will kick off Saturday's decathlon schedule at 10:30 a.m. (PT).

The UO women went 3-for-3 in 1500 qualifying with Mia Barnett (4:22.22), Klaudia Kazimierska (4:23.73) and Silan Ayyildiz (4:23.85). The men are sending two into the conference final with Rheinhardt Harrison (3:46.54) and Elliott Cook (3:47.24). All five earned automatic placement with top-five heat finishes.

Jadyn Mays ran the fastest qualifying time in the women's 200 meters, easing through the finish in 22.80 despite running into a 1.7 headwind. In the men's 200, PJ Ize-Iyamu won heat four and was third overall at 20.96 in qualifying. His race was run into a 1.3 headwind.

Defending champion Shana Grebo clocked in at 57.78 to win his heat of the 400-meter hurdles and claim a spot in Sunday's final. She had the fifth-fastest time in the preliminary round.

Up Next: Day two of the 2024 Pac-12 Championships starts at 10:30 a.m. (PT) when the decathlon picks back up with the 110-meter hurdles. Coupled with the completion of the combined events, Oregon will have 17 scoring chances—seven men, 10 women—across eight events.

The men's hammer final will be streamed on Pac-12 Mountain and Oregon at 12:30 p.m. (PT) with both steeplechase finals streaming on Pac-12 Arizona and Mountain starting at 4:20 p.m.
