Sims Wins Triple Jump on Final Day of Pac-12 Championships

BOULDER, Colo. – Arizona Track and Field concluded the final Pac-12 Championships on Sunday at Colorado's Potts Field. Sir Jonathan Sims led the way for the Wildcats, winning the men's triple jump with a personal best leap to earn his first career conference championship title.
 
Other podium finishers for the Wildcats included Zachary Extine placing second in the men's 110m hurdles, the men's 4x100m relay team placing second, and Antonia Sanchez Nunez placing third in the women's 400m hurdles. In total, the Wildcats scored points from 10 individuals and four relay teams. Both the men's and women's teams finished sixth overall in the competition.
 
"This was the best competitive meet that we've been apart of as a team this season," said Head Coach Fred Harvey. "We maxed out our points in the throws, jumps, hurdles, and sprints and did everything we could to be competitive and to be in the thick of the fight. The number one goal for us is to score points at the national level. I was so proud of what this team did this weekend. They competed hard, especially with some of the underdog performances. "

FIELD HIGHLIGHTS
Sir Jonathan Sims won the men's triple jump at the Pac-12 Championships in what was his first career conference championship victory. Sims entered the competition ranked fourth in the conference but posted a huge personal best leap on his third attempt. His winning mark of 52-0 (15.85m) is sixth all-time in school history. Additionally, Sims became just the second Wildcat to win a conference championship in the triple jump and the first since 2009. He earned 10 points for the Wildcats.
 
Sam Hala'ufia scored points in his second competition of the weekend, posting a fifth-place finish in the men's discus on the day. His best throw of the day was 178-1 (54.29m) as he netted four points for the team.
 
In the women's discus, Tapenisa Havea finished sixth overall with a throw of 176-6 (53.80m), grabbing her second top-eight finish of the weekend to score points for the Arizona Women. Havea earned three points in the event.
 
After scoring in Friday's long jump competition, Taylen Wise notched an eighth-place finish in the women's triple jump to score a point for the Wildcats. Wise's best jump on the day was 39-11.25 (12.17m). Esther Akinlosotu finished 10th in the event with a leap of 39-8 (12.09m).
 
Freshman Olivia Dillon finished 12th in the women's pole vault.
 
TRACK HIGHLIGHTS
The Arizona Men finished runners-up in the men's 4x100m relay to earn the team's first podium finish of the day. Trayvion White-Austin, James Onanubosi, Brian Limage, and Tyson Tippett clocked a time of 39.23 in the event on their way to the second-place finish. They scored eight points for the team.
 
Zachary Extine clocked his second personal best time of the weekend in the men's 110m hurdles on his way to a second-place finish. Extine's time of 13.79 moves him up to fourth all-time in school history as he earned eight points for the team. He entered the competition ranked fifth after yesterday's prelims. That is also the highest finish of his career at the Pac-12 Championships as he placed third in 2022.
 
In the women's 400m hurdles, Antonia Sanchez Nunez earned her first career conference championship podium finish. Sanchez Nunez ran a big personal best time of 56.50 to finish third overall in the competition and run sub-57 seconds in the event for the first time in her career. That time moves her into fifth all-time in school history in the event. Freshman Keilee Hall also placed eighth overall in the race with a time of 58.51. The Wildcat duo earned seven total points for the team.
 
McKenna Watson clocked a massive personal best time of 23.16 in the women's 200m to finish fifth overall. Watson scored four points for the Wildcats in what was her first career Pac-12 Championships. Watson also clocked a personal best time in yesterday's prelims which moved her onto Arizona's all-time top 10 list, but her PB in today's final moved her all the way up to third all-time in program history.
 
In the men's 200m, Tyson Tippett finished fifth overall with a time of 20.71 (+2.2) to score four points for the Wildcats. Tippett made the final in both the 100m and 200m and scored in each event for the Wildcats in the newcomer's first career Pac-12 Championships.
 
A pair of Wildcats scored in the men's 100m: Tippett and Trayvion White-Austin. Tippett finished seventh with a personal best time of 10.19 which is third all-time in school history and puts him behind only his teammate White-Austin and Michael Bates. White-Austin placed eighth with a time of 10.32. This is the first time in White-Austin's career that he has scored in the 100m at the Pac-12 Championships with the duo netting three points for the team.
 
The Wildcats started the day on the track with the women's 4x100m relay. In the event, the team finished eighth overall with a season best time of 44.58 which is fifth all-time in school history. The team of Jade Brown, McKenna Watson, Presley Money, and Camila Aguilar-Perez finished second in their heat as well.
 
To finish off the day, both the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams clocked season best times and won their heats. The men's team of Jacob Samford, Logan Hasher, Christian Simmons, and Isaac Davis placed sixth overall with a time of 3:08.42 to score three points. The women's team of Camila Aguilar-Perez, Keilee Hall, Antonia Sanchez Nunez, and Ava Simms finished seventh overall with a time of 3:35.12 to score two points.
 
Ian Sanchez Lopez competed in the men's 5000m.
 
UP NEXT
The NCAA West First Round Championships are up next for the Wildcats on May 22-25. The top 48 athletes in each event from the West Region will compete at the meet with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships on June 5-8. The regional competition will be hosted in Fayetteville, Ark., at John McDonnell Field.
