PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – No.1 Washington completed its first tournament of the spring, finishing sixth at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The Dawgs were led by a top-10 from Ying Luo as Washington finished the week at 32-over 884.

“It was a good finish overall, but there is plenty to work on,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “This is as good a field as we will probably see until the Arizona State tournament. We are usually more of a solid team that doesn't make so many mistakes, but it's a good first tournament and shows us what we need to work on.”

The Dawgs continued to move up the leaderboard on the final day at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, completing the final round at 10-over 294. Baylor took the team title at 11-over 863, building a big lead over the first two days. No. 4 USC finished second at 15-over, while third went to No. 13 Arizona who was just four strokes better than the Huskies.

No. 12 Oklahoma State and No. 7 UCLA tied for fourth, just one better than Washington. UCLA had the low final round at 3-under 281, the only team under par on Tuesday.

“It was kind of a good news, bad news day,” said Mulflur. “We got some people going, but then others that had played well weren't as good today. It was a little frustrating because the conditions were the easiest they had been all week today, but we didn't take advantage.”

The Bruins also had the individual champion in Bronte Law who finished the week at 5-under. Hayley Davis of Baylor was the runner-up at 3-under, while Amy Lee of USC took third at 2-under. Those three were the only players under par as the conditions in Palos Verdes were difficult, especially the first two days.

The Dawgs were led by Luo, who finished tied for sixth at 2-over 215. It was the best finish of the season for the junior who battled all week against an elite field. Tuesday, Luo shot a round of 2-over 73, making two birdies and four bogeys. For the week, Luo made only one double bogey or worse, while totaling 10 birdies.

“Ying really likes this course,” said Mulflur. “I think she was in the top-10 last year (she was eighth) as well. It's exciting to see her play well because she has worked really hard. She beat a lot of really good players this week.”

The low final rounds for Washington came from Eimi Koga and Charlotte Thomas. Both players finished with rounds of 1-over 72 to help the Dawgs climb a spot on the leaderboard. Koga made two birdies and three bogeys to finish at 9-over and tied for 21st for the week. Meanwhile, Thomas made a birdie and two bogeys to finish at 12-over and tied for 33rd.

The final scored used by Washington in the final round was 6-over, shot by both Jennifer Yang and Cyd Okino. Yang finished the week at 13-over and tied for 38th, while Okino was 17-over and tied for 60th.

Next up for the Huskies in the UC Irvine Kia Classic on Monday and Tuesday, February 23 and 24. The tournament will be another chance for the new Washington lineup to test itself against an elite field.
