BERKELEY ??Mads Engsted won on court six to clinch 30th-ranked California's 7-0 victory over Nevada on Wednesday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Aarhus, Denmark, product also won with teammate Filip Bergevi to clinch the doubles point.

The Golden Bears improved their record to 12-5 after the nonconference win, while the Wolf Pack fell to 5-9.

“Solid effort all around from our guys,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “(We) rode the momentum of the doubles point all through the singles. Our guys are playing well right now. I felt we got a solid effort from all six guys out there in singles today.”

Engsted, a junior, quickly dispatched Nevada's Mile Cilic, 6-2, 6-2, on Walter A. Haas, Jr. Court to give Cal a 4-0 lead and collect his 18th singles victory of the season. The teams played out the final three matches to make the score 7-0.

Earlier in doubles, Cal secured the point when the 65th-ranked pair of sophomore Andre Goransson and junior Oskar Wikberg defeated Moez Charqui and Robert Allan, 6-2, on court two (Bud Chandler Court), and then the duo of Engsted and Bergevi, a sophomore, beat Billy Bumgardner and Robert Margitfalvi, 6-4, on court three (Mascarin Court). The court one match between the 36th-ranked team of seniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton and Nevada's Fernando Sunago and Andrew Poustie went unfinished.

Cal freshman J.T. Nishimura made the score 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Allan on court five (Hirschler-Davidson Court), with Bayane posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sunago on court three to give Cal a 3-0 lead. Engsted then clinched the overall match.

Bergevi, ranked 100th in singles, finished next with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Poustie on court two. With the overall match decided, the matches on courts one and four then went to 10-point match tiebreaks in lieu of third sets. The 56th-ranked Goransson topped Charqui, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(6), on court one (Newmark Stadium), and Wikberg ended the day when he beat Ryan Andrada, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(8), on court four (Savides Sullivan Court).

“We're excited about the tennis we're playing heading into the Pac-12 season,” Wright added.

Cal opens Pac-12 action when it takes on Arizona at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Bears continue conference play when they host Utah on Saturday at 1 p.m.
