DAVIS, Calif. -- A balanced attack and total team effort helped Cal field hockey finish its Labor Day Weekend strong, topping Indiana 2-1 on Monday afternoon in Davis, Calif. Cal improves to 3-2 in 2015 after taking two of three games this weekend.

Juniors Sydney Earle and Nicole Henriksson scored for the Golden Bears, while redshirt sophomore goalie Kori Griswold notched six saves. Freshman Keats Iwanaga added a pair of defensive saves.

Earle, who broke a 22-game scoring drought on Saturday against Saint Louis, scored her second goal of the weekend with the eventual gamewinner off a deflected shot by senior Clara Goni at 5:51.

Henriksson added an insurance goal for the Bears at the start of the second half with an assist from freshman Janaye Sakkas in the 42nd minute. It was the junior's fourth goal of the season. Henriksson has scored in all but one game.

Indiana, who outshot Cal 12-10 in the contest, avoided the shutout with a shot off a deflected save from Charlie Kaste at 59:24.

While the Hoosiers edged the Bears in shots, Griswold and the Cal defense put together their most complete performance of the season, stringing together key defensive stops before sending the ball back into Indiana territory.

“It's always great to get a win out of the Big Ten, and this is kind of Big Ten week since we're going out to Penn State, so this is a good confidence builder,” said head coach Shellie Onstead. “I think they're in the perfect spot for this point in the season.”

Head Coach Shellie Onstead's Take

On overall performance against Indiana and tournament opponents:

We wanted three this weekend, and we were happy to get two out of three. It's always great to get a win out of the Big Ten, and this is kind of Big Ten week since we're going out to Penn State, so this is a good confidence builder. I think they're in the perfect spot for this point in the season.

On playing a variety of opponents this weekend:

That's the art of scheduling, and the fact that they're growing every game, and getting better every game. Regardless of the opponent, I see the “graph” going up and they're improving, and that's all I can ask for. I think the players understand now that we're only getting better and better every day.

Golden Bear Goals

5:51 – Sydney Earle

Earle says: I got the ball from Paula outside the circle, dribbled it down the baseline and saw Clari (Clara Goni) open at stroke. She pushed it to the corner and I touched it in.

41:07 – Nicole Henriksson (assisted by Janaye Sakkas)

Henriksson says: Monica Marrzzo hit the ball into Janaye Sakkas for a tip. As the ball came off the goalie's pads, I swept it into the goal.

Indiana's Goal

59:24 – Charlie Kaste
