TULSA, Okla. - In one of the biggest wins in program history in recent years, 13th-seeded/ranked California upset fourth-seeded/ranked TCU, 4-3, on Friday in the NCAA round of 16 indoors at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The victory moved the Golden Bears into the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2003, with the Bears next facing fifth-seeded Ohio State.

Cal's 31st-ranked Andre Goransson clinched Friday's thrilling win over the Horned Frogs, posting a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 result against Alex Rybakov at court-two singles.

"It was a tough one," Goransson said. "I saw that J.T. (Nishimura) was up 3-0 in the third set, and then it came down to 3-2. I was down a break, so I figured that it would come down to me. I said to myself that the journey will not be over yet for the team, and I was able to break back and win 7-5. It was pretty intense.

Of the last 10 minute of the match, Goransson said, "I held pretty comfortably, and I had match point at 5-4.  It was tough, because I knew the match could be over. I served pretty well at 5-5 and at 6-5. I trailed love-40 in the last point, and then I scored four match points in a row and was able to finish with an overhand so that was nice."

This marked Cal's second upset of TCU this year, with the Bears beating then-No. 2 TCU, 4-2, on Feb. 7 during the regular season. This is also Cal's second trip to Tulsa this season, as the Bears lost at Tulsa, 4-3, on Jan. 15

Cal's record now stands at 20-6, while the Horned Frogs end their season with a 26-4 mark.

"Every time that we play TCU it is a battle," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "The doubles was critical for us today, and it really came to a couple of points here and there. I felt that gave us some momentum going into singles play. TCU fights hard, and they are a great team who is well coached. Our guys battled as well, and I really think at the end of the day that you can't have a finer tennis match to start off the NCAA Championships."

"In rematches where you are playing the team for a second or third time of the year you realize how hard it is to beat a team twice, and it's even harder to beat a team three times," Wright added. "I was really proud of how our guys focused on the task at hand one match at a time and one point at a time. The expectation that we had was that we were going to win this match, and not a lot of other people thought that. I think that we knew that going in and that was a little bit of extra pressure on us, but I think that we rose to the challenge."

Early morning rain on Friday left the outdoor courts at the Case Tennis Center wet, so tournament officials moved Cal-TCU to the six indoor courts.

In doubles, the ninth-ranked pair of juniors Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat clinched the point with a 7-5 victory over the 65th-ranked Hudson Blake and Reese Stalder on court one. TCU had won the first match, with Cal senior Mads Engsted and sophomore J.T. Nishimura falling to Rybakov and Cameron Norrie on court three. But the pair of Goransson and senior Oskar Wikberg beat Trevor Johnson and Guillermo Nuñez, 7-6(4), on court two to leave court one as the deciding match.

TCU tied the overall match at 1-1 with the fifth-ranked Norrie's 6-4, 6-1 win over the 30th-ranked Lakat. But Cal built a 3-1 lead when the 124th-ranked Wikberg's court-five opponent, Eduardo Nava, retired with an injury and the 119th-ranked Bergevi won on court three.

Cal's 85th-ranked sophomore Billy Griffith and Nishimura lost on courts three and six, respectively, to knot the score at 3-3 – before Goransson decided matters on court two and made TCU the first top-10 seed to lose in the NCAA Championship.

"I remember coming here in January and that was quite a nightmare, because we lost 4-3 and I lost my (singles) match," Goransson said. "You know the surface and you can correct your mistakes a little bit. It was nice to get revenge on the indoor court, not the opponent but the court, we lost on earlier in the season."

Cal plays the Buckeyes at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday.
