California is looking to improve to 4-0 Saturday for the first time since beginning the 2015 season by winning its first five games.
Cal is ranked No. 24 in the current AP Top 25 and receiving votes in the Amway Coaches Poll, marking the first time Cal has been nationally ranked since Week 9 of 2015.
Justin Wilcox improved his career record at Cal to 8-7 with the Bears' most recent win over Idaho State. His record includes a 4-0 mark against non-Pac-12 Power 5 teams (North Carolina twice, Ole Miss, BYU).
Cal ranks tied for second in the nation in interceptions with seven. Jaylinn Hawkins ranks tied for second in the nation, individually, with three interceptions.
Cal's defense is currently allowing 19.3 points per game to opponents, which is 23.3 points less than the 42.6 points the Bears allowed in the final season before Wilcox arrived at Cal in 2016.
Chase Garbers set career highs in completions (20), completion percentage (20-25, 80.0%), passing yards (224) and touchdown passes (3) against Idaho State. Garbers ranks tied for 25th nationally in completion percentage (68.2) on the season.
Jordan Kunaszyk has two interceptions in as many games against Oregon. Kunaszyk's interception in the second overtime of a 52-49 double overtime victory over the Ducks clinched the victory in 2016 in Berkeley.

Dominant Defense
The Bears have allowed its first three opponents to score just nine times in 43 combined drives (20.9 percent). Cal ranks tied for second in the nation in interceptions (7). In addition, Cal has only thrown two interceptions this season (tied for 24th in the nation). Cal ranks tied for 42nd in the nation and third in the Pac-12 in scoring defense (19.3 ppg). That average is down 9.1 points from last year and 23.3 points from 2016. Cal ranks 16th in the nation in total defense (302.3), which also ranks third in the Pac-12. The Bears ranks fifth in the nation and second in the Pac-12 in passing efficiency defense (91.8).

Defensive Dynamic Duo
Evan Weaver and Jordan Kunaszyk are Cal's leading tacklers this season with 39 for Weaver and 28 for Kunaszyk. Weaver's average of 8.3 solo tackles rank second in the country. Weaver's 13.0 tackles per game average ranks seventh in the nation. Weaver set a career high with 14 tackles at North Carolina, while tying with Kunaszyk at BYU with a game-high of 12. Weaver collected three pass breakups for the first time in his career and ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-12. After notching 13 tackles against Idaho State, Weaver earned his third straight game in 2018 with at least 12 tackles. Kunaszyk ranks 13th in the nation in solo tackles (6.3 stpg). He has intercepted passes in the last two meetings against Oregon, including the game-clinching INT in the 2016 overtime victory against the Ducks.

Bears In The Defensive Rankings
Jaylinn Hawkins picked off his third pass of 2018 at BYU after catching two vs. North Carolina. He ranks tied for second in the nation in INTs with three. Ashtyn Davis ranks tied for 10th in the nation with two interceptions. Camryn Bynum registered a career-high and game-high four pass breakups vs. North Carolina. After adding one more at BYU, he ranks tied for 20th in the nation and tied for third in the Pac-12 in passes defended with five. The Cal defense has not allowed a point in the first quarter this season, and has not allowed a touchdown in the first half in 2018. Cal's defense is currently allowing 19.3 ppg to opponents. In 2016, the last year before Wilcox arrived at Cal, the Bears allowed 42.6 ppg.

Passing Game Improves With Dual QBs
In Cal's most-recent game against Idaho State, Chase Garbers set career highs in completions (20), passing yards (224) and touchdown passes (3). He completed 20-of-25 passes. Garbers' completion percentage has improved each game this season - North Carolina (7-13, 53.8), BYU (18-28, 64.3), Idaho State (20-25, 80.0). His season completion percentage of 68.2 (45-66) ranks 25th in the nation and third in the Pac-12. Brandon McIlwain threw his first touchdown pass against Idaho State. He rushed for his first TD at BYU before securing the game-clinching first down. Through three games this season, Garbers and McIlwain have combined for 255 yards on the ground, including 119 at BYU, the most in a game by Cal quarterbacks since Joe Kapp had 130 vs. Oregon in 1958. The last time Cal used two quarterbacks simultaneously during games was when Aaron Rodgers and Reggie Robertson both saw significant snaps at QB during the first month of the 2003 campaign.

National Honors Candidate Patrick Laird Leads Cal In Rushing
National honors candidate Patrick Laird scored his second receiving touchdown of the season at BYU (25 yards), his second of the season after he recorded a receiving and a rushing touchdown for the first time in his career in the season opener vs. North Carolina. Laird is Cal's leading rusher this season with 49 attempts for 144 yards and a touchdown, while he ranks third on the team in receiving with 89 yards on a team-high 14 receptions and two receiving TDs, which are tied for the team lead. His seven receptions at BYU (53 yards) were a career high. Laird is a national honors candidate and on the preseason watch list for numerous awards including those that honor the nation's top player, running back and student-athlete, as well as those that recognize community service. Laird had a breakout 2017 junior season when he rushed 191 times for 1127 yards and eight touchdowns to become the 16th 1,000-yard rusher in Cal history and the first since Daniel Lasco in 2014 while recording the 19th 1,000-yard rushing season in school history. Laird has an opportunity to become only the third two-time 1,000-yard rusher in Cal history with the others Russell White (3) and Marshawn Lynch (2).
