Huskies Improve To 12-1 After 4-3 Victory At Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The seventh ranked Washington Husky women's tennis team defeated Utah 4-3 on Sunday morning at Eccles Tennis Center. The Huskies came back from a 1-0 deficit and with the victory improved to 12-1 on the season and 2-0 in Pac-12 play.

"Today was a great win for us," said freshman Sedona Gallagher. "Utah played a really solid match and we had to fight hard on every court. I'm extremely proud of the team and I can't wait to keep competing in Pac-12 play alongside them."

The Utes jumped out to an early lead, taking the doubles point.

Senior Stacey Fung and freshman Nika Zupancic fell to Brianna Chisholm and Madison Tattini 2-6 on Court 1.

Utah clinched the point on Court 2 as Whitney Hekking and Leah Heimuli beat sophomore Vanessa Wong and freshman Zoey Weil 6-4.

Gallagher and senior Kenadi Hance were down 4-5 to Emily Dush and Anya Lamoreaux at the time of the clinched point.

In singles play the Huskies quickly took the lead and never looked back.

Gallagher defeated Heimuli on Court 5, 6-0 6-3 to tie up the match at one. She is now 8-2 in singles dual matches in her freshman campaign.

Wong gave the Dawgs a 2-1 lead as she took down Tattini 6-1, 7-5. Wong continues to be perfect in singles dual matches as she is now 12-0 on the year.

The Utes tied up the match at two as Dush beat junior Katarina Kopcalic 7-5, 6-3 on Court 3.

The Dawgs regained the lead at 3-2 as Zupancic was victorious on Court 6, 6-2, 6-2. Zupancic is now 5-1 in singles dual matches.

On Court 1, Fung dropped her match to Chisholm 5-7, 6-7 to tie up the match at three points.

It would come down to Court 4 as junior Natsuho Arakawa defeated Hekking in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the match for UW.

"I could not have clinched the match today without the support and love we have on this team," commented Arakawa. "I heard everyone's voice and heart out there and that's why I kept fighting. There is no other team that I want to be on and give it my all for."

The Huskies are now 2-0 in Pac-12 play and will host Oregon at home on Friday, March 15 at 1:30 p.m.
