No. 16 Cal Hosts Rainbow Wahine On Saturday

BERKELEY – Sixteenth-ranked California makes a brief return to nonconference play when it hosts Hawai'i on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
 
Cal is riding a four-match winning streak and brings an 8-3 record into Saturday's match. The Rainbow Wahine have a 3-6 record.

Rosenqvist Voted Pac-12 Player of the Week
Cal sophomore Julia Rosenqvist earned her second Pac-12 Player of the Week honor on Tuesday, when the Conference lauded her for going 4-0 as the Bears defeated Arizona, 7-0, and Arizona State, 5-2, last week. Rosenqvist collected her first Pac-12 honor of the season on Feb. 19.
 
Rosenqvist paired with Hana Mraz to clinch the doubles point against both Arizona teams. On March 16, Cal's court-one duo – ranked 26th last week and ranked 13th this week – upset ASU's sixth-ranked Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh, 6-2. A day earlier, the two Bears beat the Wildcats' Emma Wilson and Sophia Thomas, 7-5..
 
The 6-1 Cal star – now ranked 30th in singles – also knocked off Arizona's Wilson at court-one singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, and topped the Sun Devils' Hattingh, 6-4, 6-3.
 
Last Time: Bears Sweep Arizona Schools
Cal improved to 3-0 in the Pac-12 Conference after defeating Arizona, 7-0, on March 15 and Arizona State, 5-2, on March 16 in Berkeley. Against the Wildcats, senior Maria Smith clinched her third Cal victory of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Marie Van Aelst. Hana Mraz clinched the win over ASU with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 result over Savannah Slaysman. Mraz also teamed with fellow sophomore Julia Rosenqvist to upset the Sun Devils' sixth-ranked pair of Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point.
 
Poll Position
Cal is ranked 19th in Tuesday's Oracle ITA poll and was ranked 16th in last week's Tennis Channel/USTA Top 25. This week's Tennis Channel/USTA Top 25 comes out on Wednesday.
 
Three Bears are also ranked in Tuesday's Oracle ITA singles poll in No. 21 Olivia Hauger (19-6 record), No. 30 Julia Rosenqvist (21-9) and No. 74 Anna Bright (19-8). The pair of sophomores Rosenqvist and Hana Mraz (6-2) is ranked 13th, the team of Bright and sophomore Jasie Dunk (12-6) is ranked 23rd and the duo of Mraz and Stloukalova (7-1) is ranked 60th in Tuesday's doubles poll.

  • Hawai'i has lost five straight matches, including a 4-3 setback against Indiana on March 14 at home
  • The Rainbow Wahine plays at Long Beach State on Thursday
  • Hawai'i opened the dual-match season with a 4-3 win over Baylor, which was unranked at the time but has been ranked as high as 42nd in the Oracle ITA poll this year
  • Petra Melounova – who upset USC's 34th-ranked Salma Ewing, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, at court-one singles on March 3 – was ranked 119th in the March 5 Oracle ITA singles poll
