SADDBLEBRROKE, Ariz. – The Washington women's golf team sits in a tie for third place after the first round of play at the Mountain View Collegiate on Friday. The Dawgs shot a 2-under round of 286 and were led by sophomore
Rino Sasaki who carded a 3-under par round of 69.
"There was ideal scoring conditions today," said head coach
Mary Lou Mulflur. "The wind was down for almost the entire round so there were opportunities out there to make birdies. We made a few decisions that cost us some shots. Overall I'm pleased with our effort."
Sasaki's round of 69 puts her in a tie for second place and only one shot back of the individual leader. Sasaki only recorded two bogeys in her opening round, as well as rolling in five birdie putts.
Junior
Karen Miyamoto is tied for 13
th place after shooting a 1-under round of 71 in her opening 18 holes.
Freshman
Martha Lewis fired a 1-over par 73, which puts her tied for 27
th heading into the second round.
Senior
Julianne Alvarez also is tied for 27
th after shooting a 1-over round of 73 on Friday. Junior
Alice Duan sits in a tie for 54
th place, after she posted a 4-over round of 76.
Senior
Sarah Rhee, competing as an individual, is tied for seventh place after she carded a 2-under round of 70. Senior
Wenyung Keh, also playing as an individual, posted a round of 70 and she sits at 2-under par and in a tie for seventh place. Keh recorded six birdies in her opening round. Sophomore
Wenyan Ma, the third Husky individual, shot a 6-over round of 78 and is tied for 69
th place.
The Huskies lead the field in par-4 scoring, shooting 1-over par. UW is tied for third in birdies recorded with 19 through the first round.
Texas State leads the tournament at 6-under par and is two shots ahead of second place UNLV. Geraldine Wong of Texas State is the individual leader at 4-under par.
Washington will tee off second round play beginning at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday playing alongside UNLV and Texas State.
