AZUSA, Calif. -
A big week of California competition was kicked off today for the Huskies by their multi-event athletes, who put together strong first days at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Redshirting freshman Ida Eikeng, competing unattached, and sophomore Hannah Rusnak are first and second in the fourth group of heptathlon competition following four impressive events from each.

Eikeng transferred from Kentucky for the start of spring quarter and is redshirting the outdoor season, but she showed the major talent that had her finishing eighth at the 2018 World Junior Championships, as she won three of the four events in the group. Rusnak meanwhile was top four in three of the events and had a huge PR in the high jump to wind up right behind Eikeng and on a major PR pace.

Eikeng won the opening 100m hurdles in 13.60 seconds and Rusnak was third at 13.80. In the high jump, Rusnak's previous PR was 5-3 1/4 set indoors this season, but today she raised that by two-and-a-half inches to clear 5-5 3/4 to tie for third. Eikeng made 5-4 1/2. Eikeng won the shot put at 43-3 and Rusnak threw 39-3. In the 200-meters to close out day one, Eikeng won in 24.40 and Rusnak ran 24.69 for fourth. Their day one scores were 3,501 for Eikeng and 3,398 for Rusnak, whose previous best day one score was 3,104 last year at Pac-12s.

Junior Elinor Jones Toutant was also right near her personal-bests in all four events as she goes for her first full heptathlon score. She sits in seventh in her grouping with 2,680 points. Sh eopened with a 15.29 time in the 100m hurdles, then cleared 5-1 in the high jump. She put the shot 32-0 and closed out with a 200-meter time of 27.32 seconds.

In the decathlon, sophomore Parker Kennedy went through his first five events with a score of 3,461 points in group No. 3. Kennedy opened with a 100-meter dash time of 11.20 and then long jumped 21-6. He threw 36-2 3/4 in the shot put and then moved on to high jump 5-7 3/4. He had the fifth-best 400m time in his group to close out the day, running 49.73 seconds.
