This Week in Pac-12 Football - Week Eight
COACHING CHANGE: WASHINGTON STATE announced on Monday that head coach Nick Rolovich was relieved of his duties along with QB Coach Craig Stutzmann, OL Coach Mark Weber, CB Coach John Richardson and DT Coach Ricky Logo. Def Coord Jake Dickert was named acting head coach.
HEAD OF THE CLASS: OREGON was 10th in this week’s AP Top 25, their 6th straight week in the Top 10. It’s the longest Top 10 streak for the Ducks since the final 10 polls of the 2014 season, when they were #2 in that year’s final poll. ARIZONA STATE, UCLA, and UTAH all received votes.
#PAC12BEFOREDAWN: ESPN’s College GameDay is headed to Westwood this week ahead of the big matchup between #10 OREGON and UCLA at the Rose Bowl. Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Desmond Howard, David Pollack and crew will be on UCLA’s campus, their first trip to a Pac-12 school since 2018 at WASHINGTON STATE. Coverage begins at 6 am PT/9 pm ET.
MID-WAY MONSTERS: CBS Sports announced their Midseason All-America team with 3 representatives from Pac-12 schools with USC WR Drake London, UTAH LB Devin Lloyd and OREGON Safety Verone McKinley III all on the squad. London and Lloyd also made the AP, the Sporting News and The Athletic’s midseason lists while ARIZONA STATE LB Eric Gentry made the Athletic’s midseason freshman team.
GIVE ME MOORE: The Joe Moore Award for Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit announced the 19 members of its 2021 midseason honor roll with 3 Pac-12 schools on the list (OREGON, OREGON STATE, UCLA).

WASHINGTON (2-4, 1-2) at ARIZONA (0-6, 0-3)

WASHINGTON: Have won their last 4 meetings with Arizona, including the last 2 in Tucson. All 3 of their conference games this season have been decided by 7 points or less. Have held 4 of their 6 opponents this season under 400 total yards including 3 of them under 300. Allow 153.2 pass YPG, best in the Pac-12 and 4th in FBS. LB Zion Tupuola-Fetui, who led FBS in sacks per game last season, made his season debut last week after tearing his Achilles 6 months ago.
ARIZONA: Have held 4 of their 6 opponents under 400 total yards this season after doing it only once in 17 games over the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Allow 169.7 pass YPG, 2nd in the Pac-12 and 10th in FBS. QB Gunner Cruz will miss the rest of the season with thumb injury, the 2nd straight week Arizona has lost their starting QB to a season-ending injury. WR Stanley Berryhill had 8 receptions last week and is averaging 8.0 per game, 8th best in FBS.
BYU (5-2) at WASHINGTON STATE (4-3, 3-2)

WASHINGTON STATE: Jake Dickert will be making his debut as the acting head coach. Have won their last 3 games, longest winning streak since winning the first 3 games of the 2019 season. QB Jayden de Laura has 3 straight games with 3 passing TD and leads the Pac-12 with 15 passing TD this season. RB Max Borghi had 2 rushing TD, his first multi-TD game since November 2019. Borghi has 25 career rush TD, tied with Jerome Harrison for 2nd most in school history. Defense has forced 8 fumbles this season, T-3rd most in FBS.
BYU: Have lost 2 straight games since starting the season 5-0, including 3 wins against Pac-12 schools. 3-1 all-time against Washington State but this will be the first meeting in Pullman (last 3 in Provo plus the 1981 Holiday Bowl). The last meeting in 2012, was Mike Leach’s first game as WSU head coach. Allowed season-high 534 total yards last week at Baylor (303 rush yards, 231 pass). QB Jaren Hall has passed for 300+ pass yards in each of the last 2 games.
COLORADO (2-4, 1-2) at CALIFORNIA (1-5, 0-3)

COLORADO: Snapped a 4-game losing streak by shutting out Arizona 34-0 in Boulder last week. First time Colorado held a conference opponent scoreless since they were in the Big 12 and beat Oklahoma State 34-0 in 2005. LB Carson Wells matched his career high with 4 TFL and had the first INT return for TD by a Colorado player since 2018. Season-high 248 pass yards against Arizona, only the 2nd time in last 10 games they have 200+ pass yards.
CALIFORNIA: 4-0 all-time vs Colorado in Berkeley. 4 of their 5 losses this season are by 7 points or less. QB Chase Garbers had 31 rushing yards last week and now needs 2 yards to tie Joe Kapp for the most career rushing yards by a Cal QB (931). Garbers also has 43 career passing TD, tied with Aaron Rodgers for 8th most in school history.
#10 OREGON (5-1, 2-1) at UCLA (5-2, 3-1)

OREGON: Have won 8 of the last 9 meetings with UCLA, with the only loss in 2017 at the Rose Bowl. Rushed for 200+ yards in back-to-back games and their 210.3 rush YPG is 23rd best in FBS. 3-0 under Mario Cristobal in games played in Southern California, 2-0 at USC and 1-0 in Rose Bowl (vs Wisconsin). RB Travis Dye had 145 rush yards against Cal, the 5th of his career with 100+ yards. Dye added 7 receptions for 73 yards, only the 2nd Oregon player in at least 25 years with 140+ rush yards and 70+ receiving yards in same game (Terrence Whitehead, 2004). LB Noah Sewell had 12 tackles against Cal, 3rd time in last 4 games with 10+ tackles.
UCLA: Looking for first win over Top 10 team since 2010 at #7 Texas and first win over Top 10 team in the Rose Bowl since 2007 against #9 Oregon. Top 20 in FBS in both rush offense (219.9 YPG) and rush defense (91.1 YPG). 200+ rush yards in 6 of their 7 games this season. RB Zach Charbonnet career-high 131 rush yards last week, his 5th game with 100+ rush yards this season. A win would make UCLA bowl eligible for first time since 2017.
USC (3-3, 2-3) at #13 NOTRE DAME (5-1)

USC: Looking for first win in South Bend since 2011. Have won 8 straight road games since losing at Notre Dame in 2019. WR Drake London has 4 straight games with 100+ receiving yards, the first Trojan to do that since Nelson Agholor in 2014. QB Kedon Slovis had 401 passing yards against Utah for his 5th career game with 400+ pass yards, the most in USC history. 400+ yards of total offense in all 6 games this season. Allow 11.7 PPG in their 3 wins, 43.0 PPG in their 3 losses.
NOTRE DAME: Have won the last 3 meetings with USC and 6 of the last 8. Only loss this season was at home to then #7 Cincinnati which snapped a 26-game home win streak. 3 of their 5 wins this season are by 3 points each. Defense has held last 5 opponents under 400 yards. 36 straight wins against unranked opponents.
UTAH (4-2, 3-0) at OREGON STATE (4-2, 2-1)

UTAH: Have won the last 5 meetings with Oregon State and the last 3 in Corvallis. Looking to start 4-0 in conference play for the first time since joining the Pac-12. Outscored Arizona State 28-0 in 2nd half to overcome 21-7 deficit. QB Cameron Rising won Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, just the 7th time a player has won this award in consecutive weeks in the Pac-12 era. LB Devin Lloyd named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week & Rose Bowl Pac-12 Player of the Week after collecting 4 TFL and 2 sacks against Arizona State.
OREGON STATE: 3-0 at home this season, their best start at home since winning the first 5 in 2012. Best overall start through 6 games since also starting 4-2 in 2014. 309 rushing yards at Washington State, the 2nd time they’ve rushed for 300+ yards this season. Had not lost a game when rushing for 300+ yards since 1996. RB B.J. Baylor 3 straight games with 100+ rush yards, Jermar Jefferson did it in 4 straight last season.
ARIZONA STATE (5-2, 3-1): Will host Washington State after the bye week. 4-0 at home this season and are 14-4 at home under Herm Edwards. 148 rushing yards last week at Utah, first time under 150 yards since the 2019 Sun Bowl.
STANFORD (3-4, 2-3): Will host Washington after the bye week and will be at home for 4 of their final 5 games. QB Tanner McKee has multiple TD passes in 5 of his 6 career starts.
