Beavers To Battle Wake Forest Friday In Florida

THE GAME: Oregon State (1-4) will face Wake Forest (5-0) at 6:30 p.m. PT on Friday in the opening round of the Emerald Coast Classic at Raider Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Fla.
 
The first game on Friday will feature Penn State vs. LSU at 4 p.m. PT.
 
On Saturday, the third-place game will be played at 1 p.m. PT, while the championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT.

QUICKLY: Oregon State has lost back-to-back games by one point for the first time since the 1985-86 season (73-72 vs. Washington on Jan. 18 and 63-62  in OT at Arizona on Jan. 23) ... The Beavers are second in the Pac-12 in steals per game (7.80) ... Dashawn Davis leads the Pac-12 in assists (4.75) and is fourth in assist/turnover ratio (3.80) ... Jarod Lucas has made at least one 3-pointer in 15 consecutive games dating back to last season ... Warith Alatishe is 2-for-3 from beyond the arc this season; he went 1-for-14 from deep last season ... Ahmad Rand is averaging 10.5 points in 13.5 minutes over the last two games ... Dexter Akanno and Dashawn Davis got their first career starts against Princeton ... Maurice Calloo and Roman Silva both missed the Princeton game with mild knee injuries ... Wayne Tinkle (114) needs one win to tie Bob Hager (115) for the third-most victories in Oregon State men's basketball history; he would trail only Naismith Memorial Hall of Famers Slats Gill (599) and Ralph Miller (359).
 
vs. WAKE FOREST: Oregon State and Wake Forest are meeting for the second time with the Demon Deacons leading the series 1-0.
 
Wake Forest won the first meeting, 94-74, on Nov. 28, 1977 on their home court when it was ranked No. 17 in the nation. Rickey Lee led the Beavers with 14 points, while Brian Hilliard added 12 and Dwayne Allen finished with 11. Leroy McDonald scored 25 points and Larry Harrison added 21 to lead the Demon Deacons.
 
LAST SEASON: The 2020-21 season was highlighted by one of the greatest runs in program history:

  • Won win nine straight road and neutral-site games that included the first Pac-12 Conference Tournament championship in program history.
  • Won an NCAA Tournament game and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1982.
  • Won three games in the NCAA Tournament, tying the 1963 Final Four team for the most tournament wins in program history.
  • Ranked No. 20 in the final coaches poll; it's the first time the Beavers have been ranked in any poll since March 13, 1990.
  • Defeated five Top 25 teams, the most in a season since the 1975-76 team also won five against ranked opponents.
  • Beat a Top 25 team on the road for the first time since 1985 (at No. 21 Oregon).
  • Defeated four Top 25 teams at a neutral site; the last time Oregon State beat a ranked opponent at a neutral site came in 1992 (vs. No. 25 BYU in Portland).
