Utah claims 2022 Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics Championship

Mar 19, 2022

WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH — After finishing the regular season in a four-way tie with Arizona State, California and Oregon State (5-2), top-seeded Utah secured the 2022 Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championship at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah, on Saturday. The Red Rocks, led by stellar all-around performances from freshman Grace McCallum and junior Maile O’Keefe, topped California, Oregon State and UCLA in the championship's second session to win its second consecutive conference title.

Oregon State took a slight lead in the second session after an impressive opening rotation on beam, but then quickly lost its spot atop the leaderboard, as Utah took control at the halfway mark and never looked back. The Red Rocks gained momentum after McCallum posted her second perfect score on bars this season. The Utes had several student-athletes win multiple events, as Alexia Burch posted the top score on vault (9.925), McCallum claimed first place on bars (10.000) and tied for first on floor (9.950), and Abby Paulson won beam (9.975).

The Red Rocks finished with 198.00 points, their first 198 score since 2015. California came in second with a score of 197.425, a program-best score at the Pac-12 Championships, and were led by Andi Li and Madelyn Williams' second-place performances on bars (9.925).

Oregon State finished third (197.250), with a sixth 197 in a single season for the first time in more than 20 years. The Beavers' Pac-12 Gymnast and Freshman of the Year Jade Carey led OSU, placing in the top two in every event, winning the all-around (39.725) and tying for first on floor (9.950).

UCLA, which competed in the first session, came in fourth (196.950). In that afternoon session, Norah Flatley earned the top spot on beam (9.925), Emma Malabuyo edged out the competition to post the first session's highest floor score (9.925), and Chae Campbell finished tied for first on vault (9.900).

Arizona State came in fifth with 196.675 points, as Alex Theodorou posted the second-highest vault score of the meet (9.900).

Washington (196.400), Arizona (196.362) and Stanford (196.000) rounded out the team scores.
