Feb 15, 2023

STANDINGS | SCHEDULE | RECORD BOOK

SAN FRANCISCO - Pac-12 women’s gymnastics heads into its final month of the regular season with all eight programs ranked in the top 26 of the Road to National rankings, including four in the top 12 in No. 4 Utah, No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 California and No. 12 Oregon State. With three squads unbeaten in league action there is still much to be decided when it comes to the race to the regular season title and seeding for the 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championship, set for March 18 at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah. The upcoming competition carries extra importance as the Road to Nationals rankings switch from team average to National Qualifying Score (NQS), which ultimately determines which programs qualify for NCAA Regionals. Week seven will feature all head-to-head conference matchups with two on Saturday, Feb. 18, one being a top-10 showdown between No. 6 UCLA and No. 7 California, and two on Monday, Feb. 20 in a President’s Day women’s gymnastics doubleheader live on Pac-12 Network.

THIS WEEK

  • No. 26 Arizona, fresh off its first conference win over No. 25 Washington, heads north to Corvallis to take on No. 12 Oregon State on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. PT live on Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Arizona and Pac-12 Oregon. It will be a tall task for the Wildcats as the Beavers have not lost at Gill Coliseum since March of 2021, which includes a 4-0-1 mark in 2023 after last weekend’s tie with No. 7 California. Arizona is also looking for its first dual win in the series since 2007.
  • Saturday’s second Pac-12 dual will have the Bears and Bruins face off in a top-10 battle at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley at 2 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Los Angeles. UCLA is seeking its second conference win and will try to hand Cal its first defeat of the season with the Bears entering the weekend at 9-0-1 and 3-0-1 after the tie at No. 12 Oregon State. The two squads have split the last two dual meetings with UCLA winning in LA a year ago and Cal picking up the victory in Berkeley in 2021. Adding some intrigue to the meet is a matchup between sisters as UCLA junior Margzetta Frazier and Cal freshman eMjae Frazier face off for the first time in their collegiate careers.
  • Monday’s first matinee pits No. 4 Utah and No. 20 Arizona State against each other at noon PT/1 p.m. MT at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe. The top-25 showdown will be available to watch on Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Arizona and Pac-12 Mountain. The first-place Utes are 6-1 overall and 3-0 in Pac-12 competition with their only loss all year coming at top-ranked Oklahoma. The Utes have not lost to the Sun Devils since the 2003 season, but the last time the two squads met in Tempe in 2021, ASU came up just .300 short in the 197.450-197.150 Utah victory.
  • Week seven will conclude with a rematch of last week’s non-conference meeting between No. 22 Stanford and No. 25 Washington, with this week’s dual taking place in Seattle and counting towards league standings. The Cardinal came from behind to edge out the Huskies by a narrow 0.250 margin for their first dual meet win over UW since 2017. Monday’s meet will likely come down to the wire again with a conference win up for grabs this time around. Action gets underway at 2 p.m. PT and will be live on Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Washington.

WEEK SIX ROUNDUP

  • In a matchup between two squads looking for their first Pac-12 win, Arizona came out on top over Washington in Tucson, ending a streak of six straight dual wins in the series by UW. The Wildcats needed their season-best score to very narrowly edge out the Huskies 196.800-196.750. UW led through three rotations, but the GymCats came from behind on the floor in the final rotation thanks to three 9.90s, the best being Malia Hargrove’s event-winning 9.925.
  • For a second consecutive week Oregon State was involved in a tie in conference dual action after a late score adjustment ended the meet between the Beavers and No. 7 California in a stalemate at 197.375. The tie allowed both squads to remain unbeaten in league standings and stay very much in contention for a regular season title. For a second time in 2023, Olympic Gold Medalist Jade Carey swept all four events and the all-round with a 39.825, which is tied for the highest AA score in the country this year. Carey earned her fourth Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week award, which she shared this week with Olympic teammate Jordan Chiles of UCLA.
  • Behind Chiles’ first perfect 10 of the season on floor and a career-high 39.825 in the all-around, No. 6 UCLA dispatched No. 20 Arizona State at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday. She and Carey are one of just five gymnasts in the country to post that all-around score in 2023. Chiles nearly swept the events, also winning vault (9.950), bars (9.975) and floor (10.0) en route to her second straight and third overall Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week award this year. Chiles’ teammate Chae Campbell nabbed the Coaches Choice award this week after she returned to competition following a difficult family situation and finished in the top three on vault and floor.
  • No. 4 Utah and then-No. 24 Stanford each competed in the Metroplex Challenge in Dallas last weekend. While the two teams were slotted in different sessions, the scores counted as their conference dual this year due to scheduling conflicts. The Utes (197.600) took care of business in the afternoon session, beating No. 22 Illinois (196.300), No. 18 Georgia (196.100) and Illinois St. (195.850). The Cardinal (196.725) finished fourth in a stacked field of No. 1 Oklahoma (198.125), No. 11 Alabama (198.000) and No. 16 Arkansas (197.125). Utah saw some adversity after Olympian Grace McCallum went down with an injury in the first rotation, but freshman Makenna Smith helped the Utes overcome it, making her career debut in the all-around and finishing first with a 39.400. Her clutch performance earned her the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Week award, making her the only Pac-12 gymnast other than UCLA’s Selena Harris to pick up the award in 2023. While the Cardinal finished fourth and dropped its conference dual to the Utes, Stanford did record a season-best score and it’s highest team total since 2020 at the event. They followed that with their best home team score of the season, a 196.625, in the non-conference dual win over Washington to end the week.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • After the Pac-12 had not seen a tie in a regular season league dual since Feb. 23, 2020, there’s been back-to-back weeks with ties, both involving Oregon State. The first came between Oregon State and UCLA on January 29 in LA and the second came a week later as Oregon State hosted California at Gill Coliseum on Feb. 10. In both instances, a late score adjustment resulted in the final team scores being identical.
  • In UCLA’s win over Arizona State on Feb. 10, the Bruins posted season-highs on bars (49.575) and floor (49.675), with both scores ranking tied for ninth-highest in those events in program history.
  • No. 4 Utah’s 198.200 in the win over then-No. 5 UCLA on Feb. 3 is the fourth-highest team score in the country this season, while they are one of just five teams to post a 198+ this year. The Utes have scored 197.275 or better in all six meets this year with their only defeat coming against top-ranked Oklahoma. The 198.200 is tied for fifth-best score in program history.
  • Utah matched its school record on beam against UCLA on Feb. 3, scoring a 49.775. It is the best mark on beam in the country this season and highest score on any event overall in 2023.
  • Cal’s score of 197.600 in the win over Arizona State on Feb. 4 was the sixth-highest score in program history, while its 9-0 mark to start the year was one win shy of matching the record of 10, which was set back in 2015.
  • The Conference has seen six Perfect 10s during the 2023 season. Utah senior and back-to-back Pac-12 Specialist of the Week Maile O’Keefe, after posting her first 10.0 of the season on beam Feb. 3, followed that up with a second straight 10.0 on beam and sixth of her career to win the event at the Metroplex Challenge on Feb. 10. UCLA’s Chiles also notched her first 10.0 of the season on floor in a win over No. 20 Arizona State on Feb. 10. Earlier in the season there were three perfect 10s on the weekend of Jan. 13 - one by Utah’s Kara Eaker in the beam (second of her career in just nine beam routines) and two by Oregon State’s Jade Carey - her third career 10 on floor and her first on vault. Carey was the first OSU gymnast to record a pair of perfect scores in a meet since former Beaver Chari Knight accomplished the feat in 1993, while the Olympic Gold Medalist is the only gymnast in the country this year to capture two 10s in the same meet.
  • Oregon State’s 197.275 in the tie at UCLA on Jan. 29 was their highest score at UCLA in program history.
  • In the Oregon State and UCLA tie on Jan. 29, 2020 Olympic Team teammates Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles placed first on every event with Chiles winning bars, the pair tying for first on the floor and Carey taking the vault and beam titles and the all-around title just ahead of Chiles in second.
  • OSU’s Jade Carey, a four-time Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week honoree this season, is the only Pac-12 gymnast to win all four event titles and the all-around in a meet this season and she’s now done it twice at the Beaver Quad Meet (Jan. 21) and against No. 7 California (Feb 10). She’s posted her season-high all-around score of 39.825 twice this year, which is tied for the best mark in the country in 2023 and matches her school record for second best all-around score all-time.
  • Cal matched its season-high of 197.525 in the win over Stanford on Feb. 4, which ranks tied for ninth-best score in program history, and continued its recent dominance in the series, winning the regular season rivalry meet every year since 2014.
  • Arizona State made it seven straight dual wins over in-state rival Arizona on Feb. 4 as the GymDevils edged the GymCats 196.800-196.475 in Tempe.
  • UCLA freshman Selena Harris, the No. 1 ranked recruit in the nation last year, has lived up to her billing. Harris earned five straight Freshman/Newcomer of the Week awards to start the season, winning the all-around twice (at Wasatch Classic, at Washington) and scoring a 9.9 or better in 19 of her first 24 collegiate events, which has included seven individual events titles. Her five consecutive awards tied the Pac-12 record for most consecutive weekly awards, held by Toni-Ann Williams from California in 2015. The all-time record for most honors in a season since the award was introduced in 2013 is six, held by Williams, Utah’s MyKayla Skinner (2017) and Oregon State’s Jade Carey (2022).
  • On week three (Jan 17-19), the Conference saw two gymnasts reach milestones - UCLA’s Margzetta Frazier and Washington’s Amara Cunningham each completed 100 consecutive career routines without a single fall during competition.
  • UCLA nabbed the first career win for first-time head coach Janelle McDonald on Jan. 14 as the Bruins impressed in the night session over Washington (196.550), Minnesota (196.325) and Boise State (195.050) at the Wasatch Classic in Salt Lake City. Winning all four events, UCLA’s 197.850 was its highest score on the road since 2019.
  • Through six weekends, team and individual titles are as follows:
    • TEAM: California, 5 (Session 3 Super 16; Session 2, Wasatch Classic, at Arizona; vs. Stanford; vs. Arizona State); Utah, 5 (vs. LSU; Rio Tinto Best of Utah; vs. Washington, vs. UCLA; Metroplex Challenge); Stanford, 5 (Session 2 Super 16; vs. San Jose State, at Arizona State; vs. Arizona; vs. Washington); Oregon State 3 (Beaver Quad Meet; vs. Rutgers; at Washington); UCLA 3 (Session 1, Wasatch Classic; at Washington; vs. Arizona State); 2 Arizona (Arizona Quad Meet, vs. Washington); 1 Arizona State (vs. Arizona).

  • Utah opened the season taking down the then-No.6 LSU Tigers (197.275-196.775) in front of a packed house of over 11,000 fans at the Huntsman Center in an event that aired live on ESPN2. It was Utah’s highest season-opening score since 2005 and the third-best in program history. The Utes improved to 62-6 all-time in season openers.
  • California kicked off its season with a historical performance, posting its best overall score in a season-opening meet in program history. The Bears’ 197.457 was the 11th-best team score all-time and secured them the first-place finish in their session at the Super 16 event in Vegas. Cal’s No. 3 Road to Nationals ranking after week one was its highest in the ranking system in program history.
  • The Huskies and the Bruins also recorded their highest opening scores in more than a decade as Washington posted its best since 2004 and UCLA its best since 2005 as they competed at different sessions of the Super 16 event in Las Vegas.

ROAD TO NATIONALS RANKINGS

  • The Road to Nationals rankings serve as the official rankings for NCAA gymnastics as it tracks team and individual scores overall and by event. After the upcoming week seven competition, the Road to Nationals standings will switch to the National Qualifying Score (NQS) rather than a straight average. The NQS, which is calculated by taking the highest six scores of the season, three of which must be road scores, then dropping the high score and averaging the remaining five, is ultimately used to determine which programs qualify for NCAA Regionals. Through six weeks of competition, seven of eight Pac-12 programs are currently in top 25 in the country and all eight sit in the top 26, including three in the top 10 - No. 4 Utah (197.679), No. 6 UCLA (197.425) and No. 7 California (197.600).
  • Oregon State has made the biggest jump of any team in the country in 2023, moving up 13 spots - No. 26 to now No. 12 - from week one to week six with a 196.961 average. Arizona State stayed put at No. 20 (196.450), while Stanford climbed two spots to No. 22 (196.263), Washington re-entered the top 25 at No. 25 (196.029) and Arizona also climbed a pair of spots to sit tied for No. 26 (195.983). How the NQS will shake up the top 25 next week remains to be seen.
  • On team events scores - Utah holds the nation’s best average (49.592) and best overall score (49.775) on the beam this year with Oregon State in fourth (49.382) and California in fifth (49.375); Utah (49.333) is No. 4 and UCLA (49.238) is No. 10 on vault; On bars, California is third (49.475) followed by UCLA (49.463) in fifth and Utah in sixth (49.383); UCLA has the Pac-12’s top floor average of 49.517, which ranks tied second in the country while Utah is in seventh at 49.371 and Oregon State is in eighth at 49.350.
  • Several individual gymnasts rank among the top-10 performers in the country on individual events:
    • In the all-around, reigning Pac-12 Co-Gymnasts of the Week, OSU’s Carey and UCLA’s Chiles, are third (39.705) and tied for fourth (39.650), respectively. UCLA freshman phenom Selena Harris is seventh overall at 39.638.
    • In vault, Carey leads the country with a 9.939 average.

    • On the floor, OSU’s Carey is third at 9.950, followed by UCLA’s Jordan Chiles in a tie for fourth at 9.946 and fellow Bruin Chae Campbell in sixth at 9.940.
    • On the balance beam, Utah’s Maile O’Keefe and Kara Eaker hold the top two averages this season with O’Keefe at 9.975 and Eaker at 9.937. OSU’s Carey is tied for sixth at 9.925.
