Beaver Nation Gets First Look At 2024 Gymnastics Team

CORVALLIS, Ore. Oregon State gymnastics head coach Tanya Chaplin was all smiles after the annual Orange & Black Meet at Gill Coliseum on Saturday.

There was a lot to like.

Beaver Nation brought lots of energy. Newcomers Sophia Esposito (freshman) and Sage Thompson (transfer) both competed in the All Around and hit every routine. Young student-athletes got valuable experience. And Jade Carey ended the event with a perfect 10 on the beam.

"It was wonderful to have this event and watch them perform some of the new skills and upgrades," Chaplin said. "It's crucial for us to have this event so we can get a lot of new faces on different events and they can get some of that experience before we begin the season. Knowing how hard they work in practice is paying off when they come out here to compete."

Thompson led all competitors on the vault with a 9.800, while Sydney Gonzalez was close behind with a 9.8775. Carey and Thompson both led the way on the bars with a 9.925. Ellie Weaver had a team-best 9.825 on the floor and Carey capped the day with a 10 on the beam.

"Bars is going to be a tough event to make and it's great they are pushing each other week in and week out," Chaplin said. "Same thing on beam. A few of our young athletes who haven't been completing on beam did incredible jobs with their routines."

Chaplin was quick to thank the Oregon State fans who were in attendance.

"The crowd that we had today for an exhibition was incredible," Chaplin said. "The energy they bring is so much fun. I think this is going to be a great year so we hope to see more and more Beaver Nation when we come back home in January against Brown."
