Unbeaten Week Propels Pac-12 Men’s Soccer

PAC-12 POSTS IMPRESSIVE WEEK THREE PERFORMANCE: Pac-12 Mens Soccer went undefeated last week with a 10-0-3 record, highlighted by a 2-0-1 mark against ranked opponents. The unbeaten week helped propel the six-team Pac-12 to a 17-6-7 combined record, a .683 non-conference win percentage that ranks second nationally behind only the ACC (.722).

WEEKLY RECAP : League-leading and No. 9 ranked WASHINGTON improved to 5-1-0 overall with a 2-0 win over then-No. 14 Akron to jump 14 spots in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Huskies tallied two goals within the first 12 minutes of the match to tie a program best eight-consecutive games with at least two goals since spanning the 1991-92 seasons.

STANFORD upset then-No. 16 San Francisco, 2-0, for its first win of the season. Derek Waldeck led the offensive attack by striking first in the 66th minute and then assisting the insurance goal on a corner kick two minutes later. The Cardinal extended its unbeaten streak to 19 matches and is only one shy of tying the school record set during the 1996-1997 seasons.

No. 11 UCLA climbed from receiving votes to earning a top-15 rank after shutting out Maryland, 1-0, on Saturday. MAC Hermann Watch List member Erik Holt assisted Mohammed Kamara s game-winner, which marked his fourth goal of the season.

CALIFORNIA topped Sacramento State, 6-2, on Thursday before a scoreless tie against UC Riverside on Sunday. The Golden Bears high-scoring performance was dominated by senior Shinya Kadono , who scored four goals and tacked on an assist for an NCAA-leading nine points in a single match and earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors.

OREGON STATE defeated CSU Bakersfield, 3-1, on Friday and tied No. 17 UC Davis, 1-1, on Monday.

UCLA No. 11. SAN DIEGO STATE won the Aztec Soccer Classic for the sixth time in the events 11-year history with a 2-1 win over LIU and a comeback victory over UC Irvine, 2-1, in overtime.

PREVIEWING THE WEEK: The Pac-12 is in the stretch run of the non-conference slate with only 14 games left until league play starts Sept. 27. UCLA kicks off the schedule with a mid-week match against Nebraska Omaha on Wednesday before hosting CSUN on Sunday. Five matches take place on Friday with Cal versus Delaware and Stanford against No. 15 UMass Lowell on Pac-12 Networks, followed by Washington at Portland, which will air on TheW.tv. OSU and SDSU each have one game this week as the Beavers take on American University and the Aztecs host Brown on Friday. Stanfords second-straight game against a ranked opponent marks the start of a five-game home stand before it welcomes Delaware on Sunday and California closes out the week against the No. 15 ranked River Hawks.

NATIONAL STATS LEADERS : Stanfords third shutout of the season lowered its goals against average to 0.215 and its save percentage to .944, which rank Nos. 5 and 4 in the nation, respectively. UCLAs .889 save percentage and .250 shutout percentage both rank eighth nationally. Washingtons 17 total assists is tied for the most in the country while its 2.83 assists per game is tied for fourth.

UCLA goalkeeper Cole Martinez is one of three players in the country yet to concede a goal this season for a perfect 1.000 save percentage and fellow Bruin Mohammed Kamara has the fifth-most shots on goal per game (3.00)

MAC HERMANN NOMINEE WATCH: Drake Callende r of California and Erik Holt of UCLA represent the Pac-12 on the preseason MAC Hermann Trophy watch list. Callender posted Cals second shutout of the season and has totaled five saves on the year. Holt assisted the game-winner in UCLAs 1-0 victory over Maryland last week and was named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week. Holt is one of three Pac-12 players on the national team of the week. Washingtons Joey Parish continues to build upon a strong start to his junior campaign with two goals and an assist last week before playing 90 minutes at right back in the upset over Akron. Cals Kadono earned a spot on the team while Oregon States Eric Diaz and Washingtons Ethan Bartlow collected honorable mention.

Twenty eight players from NCAA Division I schools around the country have been marked as potential contenders for the 2017 Missouri Athletic Clubs (MAC) Hermann Trophy. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer, presented annually to one male and one female athlete.

PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: California midfielder Shinya Kadono scored a header off a crossed ball in the eighth minute of the game and was credited with the game-winner just before the end of the first half. He finished a penalty kick in the 52nd minute to extend the lead, 4-1, and tallied his fourth goal is the 71st minute. His rare nine-point match is one of the top individual performances by any player in the country as his offensive outburst tied for the most goals (4) and most points (9) in a single match this season.

TOPDRAWERSOCCER PRESEASON BEST XI : Stanford defender Tanner Beason , two-time All-Pac-12 first team selection, has been selected to the preseason All-Pac-12 team and the TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Best XI first team. UW defender Quentin Pearson was named to TopDrawerSoccers Preseason Best XI third team while new teammate Ethan Bartlow earned a spot on the freshman team. Including Bartlow, the Pac-12 had three TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Best XI freshman team selections, which tied for the most of any conference in the country. UCLA was the only school to land two incoming players on the team with forward Matt Hundley and goalkeeper Justin Garces .

PRESEASON COACHES POLL : Stanford has been predicted to win the 2018 Pac-12 mens soccer title by the Conferences head coaches for the second-straight season. Washington was picked to finish second in the league as the Huskies bring back strong leadership with 12 upperclassmen from last season's NCAA Tournament team. UCLA is slated to finish third followed by Oregon State and San Diego State tied for fifth place in the Conference poll.

PRESEASON ALL-PAC-12: Stanford and Washington lead the preseason All-Pac-12 team with three honorees each followed by UCLA and Cal with two selections. The preseason team consists of 11 field players and one goalkeeper and features eight returning 2017 All-Pac-12 honorees. Reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Blake Bodily of Washington and Drake Callender of California and Erik Holt of UCLA headline the preseason All-Pac-12 team.
