Murphy Named Pac-12 Swimmer Of The Month

SAN FRANCISCO - Three dual meets in February resulted in four individual wins and three relay wins for Cal swimmer Ryan Murphy and Wednesday that meant another award for the junior from Ponte Vedra, Fla. as he was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month for the second month in a row.

With Murphy taking the February award, Cal swimmers have earned three of the conference's four monthly awards given this season. Josh Prenot won for a standout December and Murphy claimed the honor in January. Golden Bear swimmers have now won the award nine times.

In February, Murphy did a little bit of everything for Cal in dual meets against Cal State Bakersfield, USC and Stanford. Against Bakersfield, he won the 200-yard individual medley as well as swimming the leadoff leg on the Bears' winning 200 medley relay team. One day later at USC, he won the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle, swam leadoff on the winning 200 medley relay team and was a part of a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.

Murphy capped the month with two good swims at the Big Meet, helping Cal beat Stanford with wins in the 100 freestyle and 200 medley relay. He'll look to carry that momentum into a busy month of March as he prepares to compete at the Arena Pro Series meet in Orlando, Fla. as well as the NCAA Championships in Georgia.
