No. 1 Beavers Drop Tuesday’s Game

May 20, 2014

EUGENE, Ore. Dylan Davis and Gabe Clark each drove in runs but the top-ranked Oregon State baseball team was unable to hold on to a one-run lead in a 6-2 loss Tuesday night at PK Park.

Shaun Chase opened the game’s scoring with a solo home run in the fourth, but the Beavers pushed the game to their favor with back-to-back two-out singles by Davis and Clark in the fifth. Davis’ single drove in Trever Morrison, who had walked to open the inning. Jeff Hendrix, who also walked, went to third on Davis’ single, then scored when Clark singled through the right side of the infield on a hit-and-run.

The Ducks, however, scored five in the seventh to take the lead and eventually, the win. Chase homered for the second time in the game, a three-run shot, to cap off the Ducks’ frame.

Neither starting pitcher figured in the game’s decision. Davis worked 2 1/3 innings for the Beavers, striking out two, before being relieved by Zack Reser with two runners on in the third. His counterpart, Jack Karraker, worked three innings and allowed two hits before lefty Porter Clayton came on in relief.

The loss went to right-hander Jake Thompson, who worked three innings of shutout relief before allowing all five runs in the seventh. He took the loss to drop to 3-1 on the year.

The win went to Oregon reliever Darrell Hunter, who had picked up the final two outs of the Oregon State seventh and ended the game with 1 2/3 innings of work.. He improved to 4-1.

Davis and Clark both had two hits in the loss.
