TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team finished up the first day of The Goodwin hosted by Stanford today with an 11 over round, giving them a share of 22nd place. Senior Brenden Redfern led the Wildcats by carding a 70 (E) to tie for 36th place after the first 18 holes.
"Today was tough for our team," noted head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. "George and Alex struggled to score and each has been our most reliable on the course this season. We were fortunate to have Brenden play really well and Kolton hung in despite two very bad holes. I am confident we can regroup and post a better team score tomorrow. We know the course better and the team is disappointed where we stand. But they also know we need to be patient and great golf is one shot in front of us."
Junior Kolton Lapa was only two strokes behind Redfern, earning a 72 (+2) with an eagle and two birdies. He is currently tied for 66th place. He also led the entire field in par five scoring today. Freshman George Cunningham tied for 92nd place, as his eagle and two birdies earned him a 74 (+4). Peter Koo had only one more stroke than Cunnigham as he carded a 75 (+5). He currently holds a share of 103rd place. Senior Alex McMahon carded a 77 (+7) today, which is enough for a share of 120th place.
"I think I played consistently today," Redfern reflected. "My only two bogies came because of a three putt and one poor tee shot. Tomorrow, I need to play the par fives better and hopefully move up the board a little bit."
The Wildcats tee off tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. MST, live scoring is available from GolfStatResults.com.
