Johnson Named NABC Third-Team All-American

Johnson Named NABC Third-Team All-American

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Stanley Johnson became the 28th All-American in Arizona men’s basketball history on Monday when he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ third team for the 2014-15 season.

Johnson is the fourth Arizona player to earn All-America honors during head coach Sean Miller’s tenure, joining Derrick Williams (2011), Nick Johnson (2014) and Aaron Gordon (2014). He is one of just two Pac-12 players among the 15 selected by the NABC this season, alongside Utah’s Delon Wright.

The league’s freshman leader in scoring, steals, free throws made and free throw attempts, Johnson was the lone freshman named to the All-Pac-12 first team and was also named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.

On Arizona’s freshman records lists, the USBWA Freshman All-American ranks third in points scored (523) and steals (57), fourth in free throws made (132), fifth in total rebounds (247) and free throw attempts (178), sixth in three-point field goals made (43) and seventh in field goals made (174).

He led the Wildcats in scoring (13.8/game) and ranked second in both rebounds (6.5/game) and steals (1.5/game), and is one of just two freshmen in the major college basketball conferences to average at least 13.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game (also Jahlil Okafor of Duke).

He has scored in double figures 30 times in 38-career games, leading the Wildcats in scoring 15 times and rebounds on 13 occasions, and has posted three double-doubles.

In November, Johnson was named MVP of the EA Sports Maui Invitational after averaging 15.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game as Arizona claimed the tournament crown, and he was recently named to the Pac-12 Tournament All-Tournament Team.

The Fullerton, Calif., native is also one of five finalists for the inaugural Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award.
