2016 Pac-12 Football Media Day: Washington's Chris Petersen not concerned with preseason hype

Jul 15, 2016

Just what can we expect from Chris Petersen and the Washington Huskies this season?

"We have as much hype as the new Pokemon game that nobody knows anything about but thinks it's really cool. That's us."

After finishing 7-6 in 2015 and 8-5 in 2014, the Huskies are poised to make a big jump in the Pac-12 North standings. The media recently voted them to finish second (behind Stanford), and UW actually received eight first-place votes in the poll.

But Petersen isn't all that thrilled with the preseason hype.

"Last year the preseason hype was that we wouldn't win four games, and they were dead wrong. And so, I'm really scared that you guys are dead wrong again, cause you usually are," Petersen laughed,

It's not that Petersen, who's entering his third year in Seattle, deosn't like rankings and the various college football polls. He just thinks they should come AFTER some football has been played.

"We're into rankings. We're into postseason rankings. I'm a voter on the Top-25 football teams, and it's a complete waste of time for the first five weeks."

For the Huskies coach, showing what his team can do on the field as the season progresses is how to earn their high ranking.

"We want to get out there, and we want to get better, and we want to get a chance to go prove that we're getting better. And I think that's where we are."
