Cats Suffer Walk-Off Loss in Series Opener Versus Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State's K.J Harrison singled with two outs in the ninth inning to plate the winning run and give the No.2 ranked Beavers a 4-3 walk-off win over No. 6 Arizona at Goss Stadium, Friday night.

The series opener was a classic pitcher's duel between Arizona's JC Cloney and Oregon State's Luke Heimlich. Both pitched into the seventh inning in a close, competitive game.

The Wildcats were able to knock Heimlich out of the game in the seventh inning of a 1-1 game. In the eighth, Jared Oliva hit a solo home run to give Arizona a 2-1 lead; its second lead of the game.

After Oliva's home run, Nick Quintana drew a one-out walk and then moved to second on a single from Cory Voss. Kyle Lewis then hit a ground ball to the pitcher, and it looked like a possible ground ball double play. Instead the throw to second went into center and Quintana scored all the way from second to make it 3-1.

But the Beavers answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at three. The Cats then put runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth, but Quintana popped out to end the threat, setting up Harrison's walk-off hit off Arizona reliever Tylor Megill.

Oregon State improved to 18-1 on the season and Arizona dropped to 16-5 in a game that was close throughout.

The Cats struck first, plating a run in the second inning. JJ Matijevic led off with an opposite-field double to left for his 13th two-base hit of the season. After a strikeout and a walk put two men on with one out, Lewis blooped a single to shallow left-center to score Matijevic from second and give Arizona the early lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Beavers responded with a run to knot the game up. Like Arizona, Oregon State started the inning with a leadoff double, courtesy of right fielder Trevor Larnach. After a sacrifice bunt moved Larnach to third, Andy Atwood lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Larnach and tie the game.

Cloney got into a little bit of trouble in the third and fourth innings, but worked out of it each time. In the third, Oregon State had two men reach with one out, but Cloney struck out Christian Donahue and then got K.J. Harrison to ground out to end the threat. In the fourth, the Beavers again got runners on first and second, this time with two outs. But Cloney got Zak Taylor to fly out to end the inning and keep the game tied.

Cloney cruised through the fifth, and then saw his offense put Heimlich on the ropes in the sixth. With two outs and nobody on, Matijevic singled through the middle. Nick Quintana and Cory Voss followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases for Lewis. Lewis and Heimlich battled with Lewis fouling several off. But on a 2-2 count, Heimlich got Lewis looking to end the threat and keep the bases loaded.

Cloney worked a quick sixth inning, setting the Beavers down in order for the second straight inning. Heimlich then came back out for the seventh for the Beavers, and after getting Cesar Salazar to fly out, he exited after 6 1/3 innings and more than 100 pitches.

Cameron Cannon coaxed a walk off Beavers reliever Grant Gambrell to put a runner on. With two outs and lefty Alfonso Rivas up, Oregon State brought on lefty Brandon Eisert for the lefty-on-lefty matchup. Cannon advanced on a wild pitch and then Rivas hit a sharp ground ball up the middle, but Oregon State's Cadyn Grenier made a backhanded stop on the play and threw Rivas out for the final out of the inning.

Cloney got through the seventh to keep the game deadlocked before Oliva's home run. Cloney didn't factor in the decision, but went 7 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out five. Heimlich gave up one run on four hits and three walks over 6 1/3 innings. Matijevic had three hits in the loss and Oliva finished 2 for 5 with his home run.

Game two of the series is set for 4 p.m., Saturday.
