TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona's track and field team wrapped up day two of the Pac-12 vs. Big 10 Invitational today at Arizona State University.
"The important thing we can take away from this meet is that we continued to compete at a higher level after having a good meet last weekend at Willie Williams," head coach Fred Harvey said. "We were very well rounded today, from our 400-meter athletes to our throwers."
Viktor Gardenkrans set a new personal best in the discus throw with a mark of 55.56 meters (182' 3.25") for a fourth-place finish. That mark is currently top-15 in the country. Aaron Castle took ninth-place with a mark of 52.90 meters (173' 6.5"). In the shot put Castle took third-place with a mark of 19.03 meters (62' 5"), a top-five mark in the country currently.
April Sutton ran a time of 13.94 seconds for second-place in her first 100-meter hurdle race of the season. Tiana Bonds came in third-place with a time of 14.20 seconds.
Bryce Houston took third-place in the 400-meter with a time of 47.22 seconds. Freshman ZaKee Washington took fifth overall with a time of 47.36 seconds. Washington went on to take seventh in the 200-meter with a time of 21.51 seconds.
Sage Watson took second-place in the 200-meter race with a time of 23.80 seconds. Savaughn Christman took seventh with a time of 24.42 seconds.
"This was definitely a practice meet for me," Watson said. "I am gradually getting closer to competing in the 400-meter hurdles. As for the team I think we continue to make progress and at the Jim Click Shootout we should be seeing a lot of personal best marks."
Claire Green took second-place in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:26.55.
Carlos Villarreal ran a time of 1:49.84 in the 800-meter for third-place. That time was a top-15 mark in the country.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Bryce Houston, Miles Parish, Michael Demby and ZaKee Washington took second-place overall and ran the sixth-best time in the country at 3:07.84.
The Cats will continue their outdoor season next weekend at the Stanford Invitational.
