TUCSON, Ariz. –The Wildcat Invitational concluded with a thrilling three-setter in the Cardinal Singles Draw finals. In the end, Jeremy Moser of Fresno State defeated Trent Botha 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. Botha also competed in a doubles match today with Shoti Meparidze. The duo lost to the Flores/Menard pairing from New Mexico State by a score of 7-5.
 
The sole Wildcat win on the day came from Meparidze in his singles match against San Diego State's Jan Kirchhoff. Meparidze dropped the first set, but came back to win 3-6, 6-0, 13-11.
 
"We're going to build off this week," head Coach Clancy Shields said. "There were some positives, some things we need to work on, but it was the first tournament for most of the guys. Hopefully, it's a humbling experience for our guys. Obviously, we set our goals a little higher for this tournament, and didn't really achieve what we wanted to. Sometimes it's great to be humbled, especially in the first week."
 
The Cats will have the chance to build from this experience on Oct. 19 when they head to Malibu, Calif. for ITA Regional Tournament and host the Arizona Fall Hidden Dual. Shields remains confident that his team will be ready for those events.
 
"If we're humbled and hungry and get to work next week, I think we'll see a quick turnaround. The guys have been playing at a much higher level in practice than they did this week in matches. It shows we're a little bit rusty, but we'll make those corrections."
