At Friday’s opening ceremony in Tokyo, three Pac-12 Olympians carried the flags for their respective countries – Arizona swimmer Felicity Passon for the Seychelles and two former USC swimmers, Yakov Toumarkin for Israel and Robert Glinta for Romania.

The Seychelles, Israel and Romania are just three of the 54 National Olympic Committees in 30 sports that include Pac-12 athletes in Tokyo. Within the U.S. delegation, 20% of the 613 athletes come from various schools across the Pac-12 Conference.

“Alone during this pandemic, during the postponement, during a lot of our individual and team hardships and struggles, a lot of us wouldn’t have made it,” STANFORD alumna and Team USA women’s water polo captain Maggie Steffens said “But together, anything truly was possible.”

On the softball field, five of the six teams competing in the Games feature Pac-12 athletes. Team USA, which began play earlier this week with wins over Italy and Canada, boasts eight Pac-12 athletes from five schools (ARIZONA, UCLA, OREGON, CALIFORNIA and WASHINGTON). Team Mexico, comprised of six Pac-12 athletes from three schools (UTAH, ARIZONA and ARIZONA STATE) went 0-2 earlier this week falling short to Canada and Japan.

Tokyo Talk: As the games begin, the Pac-12 will have to win at least 55 medals in order to match the success the Conference achieved five years ago in Rio.

Looking Ahead: The ultimate battle between Pac-12 rivals and teammates will happen on Saturday at Yokohama Stadium as Team USA softball faces Team Mexico.

Rowing was the featured sport on Friday prior to the Opening Ceremony with heats in the single, double and quadruple sculls. STANFORD's Veronica Toro Arana (Puerto Rico) took third in her heat and also advanced.

In the double sculls, WASHINGTON's Chiara Ondoli and Italy took third to move on to an A/B semifinal on Sunday.

In the quadruple sculls, CALIFORNIA's Jack Cleary earned a trip directly to Monday's A-final with his Australian teammates after a second-place finish in their heat. On the women's side, WASHINGTON's Valentina Iseppi (Italy), UCLA's Marie Jacquet (France) and STANFORD's Alie Rusher (USA) and their crews will have to race in a repechage to remain in medal contention after finishing outside of the top two in their heats.
