Pac-12 Men's Basketball Weekly Rundown - December 20, 2022

Dec 20, 2022

COMPLETE RELEASE

#PAC12MBB STARTING FIVE:

.743 - Pac-12 Men’s Basketball has enjoyed an improved December to this point, posting a 26-9 non-conference record (.743) during the month to date.

  • That December mark includes six wins over Power 6 Conference foes and five against AP Top 25 opponents.
  • Just last week (12/12-18), the league combined to go 18-4 with five Power 6 and four ranked wins.

3 - Three Pac-12 programs appear in the latest AP Top 25 - #5 ARIZONA, #13 UCLA, #25 ARIZONA STATE - the first time since the preseason poll with a trio of Pac-12 teams.

  • The Sun Devils are in the AP Top 25 for the first time since the Dec. 7, 2020 poll.
  • The Wildcats and Sun Devils will meet in Tempe for their first games back in Pac-12 league play on Saturday, Dec. 31 (11 a.m. PT, FOX). Should the rankings hold, it will mark just the fifth meeting with both teams ranked as Pac-12 members (2x 1994-95, 2x 2017-18) and seventh all-time (2x 1974-75).

10 - Pac-12 Men’s Basketball programs have combined for 10 victories over AP Top 25 opponents during non-conference play. ARIZONA leads all NCAA Division I programs with four, followed by two apiece for COLORADO and UCLA, and one each for ARIZONA STATE and USC.

  • The 10 ranked victories are currently the most of any NCAA Division I conference.
  • It’s the most AP Top 25 wins during non-conference play for the Conference since expanding to the Pac-10 in 1978-79 (previous high was nine in 1994-95 & 1999-00).
  • Per STATS Perform, it is only the 22nd time a conference has reached double-digit AP Top 25 victories during non-conference play since 1980-81 (ACC 8x, Big East 6x, Big Ten 4x, SEC 2x, Atlantic 10 1x).

15 - Non-conference play concludes for the Pac-12 this week with a 15-game slate featuring:

  • Two AP Top 25 and Power 6 Conference opponents - #20 TCU vs. UTAH, #23 Auburn at WASHINGTON
  • The potential for a league-record tying fourth MTE tournament title as WASHINGTON STATE competes in the Diamond Head Classic with GW, Iona, Pepperdine, Seattle U, SMU, Utah State and host Hawai’i.
  • ARIZONA (Maui Invitational), ARIZONA STATE (Legends Classic) and WASHINGTON (Wooden Legacy) also won MTEs this season.

43-5 - ARIZONA second-year head coach Tommy Lloyd owns a 43-5 record through his first 48 career games.

  • With a victory over Montana State on Tuesday, Lloyd can at least match the best 50-game coaching start in Conference history, currently held by UCLA’s Gary Cunningham (44-6, 1977-79).
  • With two victories this week, Lloyd would tie the second-best record through 50 games in the history of NCAA Division I men’s basketball (Doc Meanwell, Wisconsin, 1911-14 - 49-1).
    • Best Head Coaching Record through first 50 games (NCAA Division I)
      1. Doc Meanwell, Wisconsin - 49-1 (1911-14)
      2. Clair Bee, Rider - 45-5 (1928-31)
          Bill Carmody, Princeton - 45-5 (1996-98)
          Bill Guthridge, North Carolina - 45-5 (1997-98)
          Brad Stevens, Butler - 45-5 (2007-09)
      6. Buck Freeman, St. John’s - 44-6 (1927-29)
          Brad Underwood, Stephen F. Austin - 44-6 (2013-15)
          Lew Andreas, Syracuse - 44-6 (1924-27)
          Gary Cunningham, UCLA - 44-6 (1977-79)
          Steve Prohm, Murray State - 44-6 (2011-13)
      11. Adolph Rupp, Kentucky - 43-7 (1930-33)
            Everett Case, NC State - 43-7 (1946-48)

PAC-12 NOTES
