Cal Outlasts Beavs in Saturday Battle

May 4, 2024

BERKELEY, Calif. – One swing of the bat in the bottom of the fifth by No. 19 California spoiled Oregon State's upset bid as the Golden Bears sealed the series with a 3-1 win.

When the Beavers (20-28, 8-15 Pac-12) found themselves down a run in the fourth, Eliana Gottlieb tied the affair with a no-doubt home run to right field, answering a solo shot by the hosts from back in the second.

California took the lead back – for the final time – with Lagi Quiroga's two-run shot to left-center to put pressure on the Beavers to respond again.

Looking to punch back and at least tie the game again, Oregon State took advantage of a Golden Bear miscue and consecutive walks to load the bases with just one out in the sixth. The Beavers ended the frame empty-handed as the sixth ended with a swinging strikeout and a pop fly in foul ground.

Logan Hulon (6-11) was tagged with the loss after giving up all three Cal runs in 6.0 innings tossed. She struck out four and walked one. Gottlieb and Paige Doerr led the OSU offense with each adding a hit to the ledger.

Oregon State and Cal will wrap up the series tomorrow with game three set for noon. Action from Levine-Fricke Field can be seen on Pac-12 Networks.
