TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Kieren Thompson won his opening match at the ITA All-American Championships, held in Tulsa, Okla., on Sunday.
Thompson defeated Justin Butsch of Louisiana State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to take his first match of the tournament. In the following round, Thompson fell to Jacob Wilson of Illinois State 6-4, 6-4.
Senior Fredrik Ask tried to hold on in his match by toughing out a tiebreaker win in the second set, but it wasn't enough as he fell to Marquette's Vukasin Teofanovic, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4.
After his win Saturday, junior Sumeet Shinde fell in a three set match to Hawaii Manoa's Danillo Casanova, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Mario Urquidi also lost, this one to Middle Tennessee's David Fox, 6-2, 6-0.
Shinde and Ask will continue in the tournament as a doubles team later this week as they compete in the qualifying round.
