TUCSON, Ariz. – The 38th ranked University of Arizona women's tennis team defeated the 65th ranked BYU Cougars on Friday, Feb. 13 4-3. 96th ranked Lauren Marker and 113th ranked Briar Preston continued their hot start to the season with victories today.
“This was a hard fought match,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We had to dig deep to get the needed wins. BYU was solid all the way down the lineup and challenged us on every court. I was extremely proud of the heart we showed today and loved our intensity out there. We continue to grow every week and I hope to carry this positive momentum into next week.”
Things got off to a good start for Arizona as they won the doubles point. Marker/Inge Hendrikx defeated Nicolette Tran/Savannah Ware in convincing fashion 8-2. Laura Oldham/Devin Chypyha clinched the doubles points for the Wildcats as they won their match against Megan Sheehan-Dizon/Morgan Anderson-Litt 8-6. Preston/Shayne Austin's match against Mayci Jones/Toby Miclat went unfinished, but they were up 7-3 when the match was called.
Preston set the tone in singles for the Wildcats as she defeated Sheehan-Dizon in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Marker followed suit as she also won in straight sets against Jones 6-3, 6-0. Hendrikx and Austin dropped their matches 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-4. Chypyha clinched it for the Wildcats as she defeated Anderson-Litt in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Oldham's match ended in dramatic fashion as it went to three sets for the second straight match. She lost to Tran though 5-7, 6-4, 10-6.
The Wildcats hit the road for the first time this year as they travel to San Diego, Calif. to take on San Diego State on Friday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. MST and San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. MST.
