Cunningham Tied for Lead, Cats In Seventh at John Burns

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team wrapped up round two at the John Burns Intercollegiate Thursday with a 13-over-par second round and now sits in seventh place at 21 over par. The Wildcats were headlined by freshman George Cunningham, who is tied for the indiivdual lead and used three birdies and 14 pars to bring his total score to six under par. Round three will continue Friday at the Wailua Golf Course at 11:30 a.m. MST.

“The team got off to a great start today,” said head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “George is showing incredible maturity as a competitive golfer. He was hitting good shots today but also got up and down to save pars on a very windy day. He made only one bogey which is very impressive. Having a freshman with a chance to win is a great sign for us.”

Junior Kolton Lapa moved into a tie for 34th place at six-over-par after posting a six-over 78 on Thursday. Senior Alex McMahon carded a three-over 75 and sits in a tie for 45th at eight over par. Both Brenden Redfern and Max Donohue carded six-over 78s today. Redfern sits in a tie for 73rd at 13-over-par, while Donohue is tied for 88th at 18-over.

“Making the turn, we told the guys to keep fighting because the winds were picking up and we had some difficult holes to play,” commented Anderson. “We are all a little disappointed that we couldn't keep up the strong scoring, but we know we can get off to a good start again tomorrow. We moved up the leaderboard and we are looking for a great day to finish off a fun week in Hawaii. The team is focused and we know we can still finish off the week on a strong note.”

Freshman Jake Kreuz is still playing well, as he moved into 27th place overall (+5) after a six-over 78 today.
