Red Defeats Blue, 3-1, in Intrasquad Scrimmage

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona volleyball held its annual Red-Blue scrimmage on Saturday in McKale Center in front of a few hundred fans who took advantage of their first opportunity to see the 2018 Wildcats.

Team Red defeated Team Blue 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21) in the four-set scrimmage.

Players switched teams between sets as head coach Dave Rubio used the intrasquad scrimmage to get looks at various lineups.

"I like what I saw," said head coach Dave Rubio. "Our starting point is much better than we were a year ago. It's clear and very evident to me that we're a much improved team. I know we're going to be very competitive against every team that we compete against this fall."

Senior Kendra Dahlke led all Wildcats with 17 kills on the match on .273 hitting. She added 14 digs for a double-double in the match.

Dahlke was one of four Wildcats with double-figure kills. Joining her were sophomores Katie Smoot (15), Paige Whipple (12), Elizabeth Shelton (10).

Junior Julia Patterson posted a double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs in the match, while Whipple's game-high 15 digs gave her a double-double as well. Dahlke (14), Malina Kalei Ua (14) and Makenna Martin (11) also had double-digit digs in the match.

In her first match in a Wildcat uniform, freshman Zyonna Fellows led Arizona with six blocks. She added a pair of kills as well.

The scrimmage signaled the end of fall camp as the Wildcats will now turn their attention to game-week preparation.After a two-week training camp, the Cats are now six days away from the 2018 campaign. UA opens the season in Sacramento, California in the Hornet Invitational. Arizona takes on CSUN (10 a.m. MST) and Utah State (5 p.m. MST) on Friday and Sacramento State on Saturday (1:30 p.m. MST).

UA will then return home the following weekend for the home opener when it welcomes Lipscomb, San Diego State and Pacific for the Cactus Classic, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.
