Arizona Sweeps UMass Lowell in Saturday Doubleheader

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats swept a doubleheader from the UMass Lowell River Hawks on final scores of 18-4 and 19-4 on Saturday at Hi Corbett Field.

The Wildcats cruised to an 18-4 victory in game one behind superlative performances from designated hitter Ryan Holgate and second baseman Cameron Cannon. Holgate finished the afternoon game going 2-for-3 with one run scored, one home run, and four RBI; his three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning was the first of his college career. Cannon posted a 3-for-3 performance with three runs scored, a trio of doubles, and two RBI.

Center fielder Matt Fraizer (2x3, 3 R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) and first baseman Matthew Dyer (2x4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB) also collected multiple hits during the offensive onslaught. In total, every member of the Wildcats starting lineup reached base at least once in game one.

Junior Andrew Nardi, in his first career start with Arizona, struck out nine batters over 5.0 innings of standout work. He allowed just two runs on three hits and earned the win to move to 1-0 on the year.

Left-hander Randy Abshier followed Nardi out of the Wildcats bullpen and closed out the game. He allowed two runs on four hits over the final 4.0 frames to lock down his first career save.

Holgate continued his hot hitting in game two, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, one home run, three RBI, and a walk. Cannon also checked in with another multi-hit outing, posting a 2-for-3 nightcap performance with three runs scored, one double, one RBI, and one walk.

First baseman Austin Wells (2x4, 3 R, 2B, 3 RBI, BB) and catcher Matthew Dyer (3x3, R, 2 RBI, BB) both logged multi-hit outings. The Wildcats offense pounded out 16 hits in game two, a season-best mark.

Freshman right-hander Bryce Collins got the call to start in game two and turned in 4.0 innings of three-run work (two earned runs). He scattered four hits and struck out six, but did not factor into the decision.

Right-handers Vince Vannelle and Nate Brown wrapped up the game from the Arizona bullpen – the pair combined to hold the River Hawks to just one run on five hits while striking out five. Vannelle (1-0) worked 3.0 innings of scoreless ball to earn the win.

Arizona and UMass Lowell wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon, with a 1:00 PM first pitch scheduled at Hi Corbett Field.
