Cats, Beavers set for Saturday Doubleheader

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Arizona Wildcats carry on with their three-game series against the No. 2 ranked Oregon State Beavers on Saturday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. 

The Beavers took game one of the series, 8-4, despite trailing most of the game. Nick Quintana and Tony Bullard both hit home runs for the Wildcats, driving in all of Arizona's runs. It was the first career home run for Bullard, who also smacked a double in the game.

With Friday night's game postponed due to weather, the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday to complete the series. Game one will begin at 2:05 p.m. MST, while first pitch for game two is slated for 7:02 p.m. MST. Game two will be televised on ESPNU.

SINCE LAST TIME: Since the last set of game notes, the Wildcats dropped two of three games to the California Golden Bears during a weekend conference series...Arizona won the series finale, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon to avoid being swept...The Sunday win was their first win of the year when scoring six or fewer runs...Starting pitcher Andrew Nardi spun six scoreless innings in Sunday's win while striking out six...Catcher Austin Wells reached base safely in all three games to extend his on-base streak to 28 games...Outfielder Branden Boissiere saw extended playing time and went 7-for-10 with three runs scored, one RBI, and one walk during the weekend to raise his season batting average to .303.

FACE THE NATION: The Arizona offense has steadily produced at a high level this season and ranks among the top Division I offenses in the nation in multiple categories including: scoring/runs per game (T-3rd, 9.1), on-base percentage (T-4th, .420), total runs (4th, 310), triples (4th, 20), triples per game (4th, 0.59), walks (7th, 212), doubles per game (7th, 2.38), doubles (8th, 81), slugging percentage (9th, .493), and batting average (13th, .307)...Under the direction of Jay Johnson (since 2016), the Wildcats have posted best batting average in the Pac-12 at .295 (next: Oregon State, .292).

FRESH PRINCE OF WELLS-AIR: Arizona catcher Austin Wells is putting together one of the best freshman seasons in Wildcats history...Through 34 games, Wells has hit .372 with 43 runs scored, 17 extra-base hits, 33 RBI, and nearly as many walks (25) as strikeouts (26)...His .372 batting average is currently ranked first among all Power Five conference freshmen, fifth among all Division I freshmen (first: C Ryan Hampe, UIC, .443 in 79 at-bats), and 15th among all Division I catchers...Wells' 43 runs scored are second most among all Division I freshmen, tied for 23rd most in the nation, and fourth most in the Pac-12...His 48 base hits are tied for 10th most among all Division I freshmen...His .466 on-base percentage is tied for third most among Division I freshmen with at least 100 at-bats this year...The Arizona freshman record for batting average was set at .374 by Dave Page in 1981...Wells' success has continued well into Pac-12 play as well, with his conference batting average currently sitting at .390, the eighth best conference mark in the Pac-12...Arizona's freshman conference record for batting average was set at .418 by T.J. BUSTER POSEY AWARD: Wildcats catcher Matthew Dyer was named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award watch list...This award was formerly known as the Johnny Bench Award, and is presented annually to the nation's top division one collegiate catcher...Dyer is currently first on the team and 3rd in the Pac-12 with a .397 (50x126) batting average, while his 50 hits are tied for fourth most in the conference and his 76 total bases rank sixth on the circuit...Dyer has hit safely in all but eight games this year, with 16 multi-hit performances, and has logged a .987 fielding percentage in 229 chances.

RUN, FOREST, RUN!: The Wildcats currently rank second in the Pac-12 and seventh nationally with 310 runs scored this season...Arizona's average output of 9.1 runs per game is tied for the third best mark in the country, behind New Mexio State (11.5), and Penn (10.0)...The Wildcats have scored at least three runs in all but two games this year, and have plated 10+ runs 14 times, including once against UCLA and their pitching staff that had the best team ERA in the conference at the time...When Arizona scores more than five runs in a game this year they have posted a winning record of 17-6 (.739)...The Wildcats are currently on pace to score 511 runs this year, which would be the most in a single-season since the 1998 squad scored 546 runs...The Wildcats have out-scored their opponents in 7-of-9 innings this season (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th).
