ORLANDO – Freshman
Jonas Ziverts became the first Wildcat since All-American Roger Matalonga in 2006 to compete at the NCAA Singles Championships today. He faced off against Aleksandre Bakshi from Oklahoma in the first this morning and dropped a close match by a score of 7-6(3), 6-4.
Â
"Jonas played tough today and unfortunately came up short," head coach
Clancy Shields said. "He had multiple set points in the first set, and a commanding lead in the second, but couldn't finish. We will learn a lot from this match, regroup, and come back stronger. Jonas has a bright future, and with continued growth he will be back in the NCAA's next year and make a serious run."
Â
Ziverts, the No. 66 player in the country, finished the season with a 12-7 record, with 10 wins coming at the No. 1 spot in the lineup during dual matches. The Wildcats, who reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010, return five of their six student-athletes who spent the majority of the time in the lineup during the season.
