Utah headed back to Rose Bowl as seven Pac-12 teams are slated for bowl games

Dec 4, 2022

Pac-12 champions, No. 8 Utah, headed to the Rose Bowl

SAN FRANCISCO – No. 8 UTAH (10-3) will be making their second straight trip to the Rose Bowl Game after they defeated USC in Las Vegas, 47-24, in the 2022 Pac-12 Football Championship Game, presented by 76®.  The Utes overcame a 17-3 deficit in the first half, outscoring the Trojans 44-7 the rest of the way, to claim the Pac-12 crown in front of a sold-out crowd at Allegiant Stadium.

Utah became just the third school to win back-to-back Pac-12 Football Championship Games and will face No. 11 Penn State (10-2) from the Big Ten Conference on Monday, January 2 on ESPN.  This will be the first first ever meeting between the Utes and Nittany Lions and the fifth different Big Ten school that Utah will have faced in a bowl game.  This will be Utah's fourth appearance in a New Year's Six bowl and second straight, having won both the Fiesta Bowl in 2005 and Sugar Bowl in 2009.

No. 10 USC (11-2) will head to Arlington, Texas for the Goodyear Cotton Bowl to face No. 16 Tulane (11-2), the American Athletic Conference champions, on Monday, January 2 on ESPN.  This will be the Trojans third appearance in the Cotton Bowl (1994 and 2017 seasons) and their first appearance in a New Year's Six bowl since the 2017 Cotton Bowl.  USC will be facing Tulane for the first time in 76 years and has an all-time record of 2-1 against the Green Wave, including a 1932 Rose Bowl win that gave the Trojans a national championship.

No. 12 WASHINGTON (10-2) will be making their second appearance in the Valero Alamo Bowl when they take on No. 20 Texas (8-4) from the Big 12 on Thursday, December 29 on ESPN.  The Huskies previous trip to San Antonio was the 2011 Alamo Bowl when they faced Baylor in what was the second highest scoring bowl game in college football history (67-56).  This will be Washington's fourth all-time meeting with Texas and first since the 2001 Holiday Bowl.

No. 15 OREGON (9-3) will be representing the Pac-12 in the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl against North Carolina (9-4) of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday, December 28 on FOX.  The Ducks will be appearing in the Holiday Bowl for the fourth time and first since beating Oklahoma State 42-31 in 2008.  This will be the first ever matchup for Oregon and North Carolina and the Ducks' first bowl game against an ACC opponent since the 2014 College Football Playoff semifinals, when they beat Florida State 59-20 in the Rose Bowl.

No. 14 OREGON STATE (9-3) will face off with Florida (6-6) of the Southeastern Conference in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday, December 17 on ABC.  This will be the Beavers third ever trip to the Las Vegas Bowl (2003 and 2009) and will be looking to win 10 or more games in a season for the third time in school history.   Oregon State will be facing Florida for the first time and it will the Beavers' first ever bowl game against an SEC opponent (Missouri was a member of the Big 12 for the 2006 Sun Bowl).

No. 18 UCLA (9-3) will be making their fifth appearance in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl as they take on Pittsburgh (8-4) of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Friday, December 30 on CBS.  This will be the 15th ever meeting between the Bruins and Panthers but first since 1972 (UCLA leads 9-5).  UCLA will be making their first trip to the Sun Bowl since 2013 when they beat Virginia Tech 42-12.

WASHINGTON STATE (7-5) will be headed to Los Angeles for the second annual Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl presented by Stifel.  The Cougars will face off with Mountain West Champion Fresno State (9-4) on Saturday, December 17 on ABC.  Washington State will be facing the Bulldogs for the fifth time but first since 1994 in Pullman.

The Pac-12 finished with six teams in the final College Football Playoff rankings, the first time they've done that since 2014.
