CALIFORNIAs SR D Steve Birnbaum earned his second-career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor after scoring two goals in two victories over top-three ranked opponents, including an assist on the game-winning goal versus then-No. 2 Maryland.

No. 10 California launched into the national spotlight after upsetting two of the top teams in the country over the opening weekend and jumping into the rankings after entering the season unranked. The Bears knocked off No. 3 Georgetown and No. 2 Maryland. Along with senior Birnbaums two goals, junior Seth Casiple recorded two assists, leading the team in that category.

No. 6 UCLA upset No. 1 Indiana in a thrilling overtime match on Sunday after tying No. 7 Notre Dame on Friday. Senior forward Victor Chavez netted the only goal of the game, 49 seconds into overtime, to give the Bruins their first win over Indiana since 2000. Goalie Earl Edwards Jr. shut out both opponents and was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week.

The other Pac-12 team with a 2-0 start is OREGON STATE, which blanked Cleveland State and UC Davis to open their season. The Beavers distributed the ball well as all five goals on the weekend came from five different players. Goalkeeper Matt Bersano recorded 14 saves in his two shutouts.

SAN DIEGO STATE split their opening weekend, losing to Florida International but garnering a huge 5-0 win over in-state rival No. 16 San Diego. It was the Aztecs largest win over USD since a 6-0 win on Oct. 5, 1988. Senior midfielder Abraham Villon recorded three goals over the two games and leads the Conference in goals (3) and points (6) so far.

No. 19 WASHINGTONs only game of the weekend was a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga, with senior goalkeeper Spencer Richey recording seven saves.

STANFORD scored three goals in a tie against No. 2 Maryland Friday night before falling 2-0 to No. 3 Georgetown on Sunday.

HIGH SCORING WEEKEND: Pac-12 teams totaled 23 goals on the weekend, 10 more than the number of goals scored in the 2012 season-opening weekend.

TRAVEL TIME: Five of the six Pac-12 teams hit the road for at least one match this weekend, with San Diego State being the only school to stay on their home turf.
