Video: Mike Montgomery endorses Travis DeCuire as replacement

Mar 31, 2014

Most coaches don't get to pick their successor when they hand over the whistle for the last time.

But Mike Montgomery, who announced his retirement from coaching on Monday, made it clear during his retirement presser who he wants to replace him as Cal basketball's next boss.

"We've got the guy in this room that should have my job, and that's Travis [DeCuire]."

DeCuire has been with the program for six seasons now, spending the past two years as the Golden Bears’ associate head coach.

So, athletics director Sandy Barbour, what do you do when Montgomery name-drops his guy right next to you on the podium?

“Well, you pay attention," she laughed.

"Mike said it: With the success that this program has had, those that have been involved certainly demand a good look. Certainly. And there's no doubt in my mind that Travis DeCuire is a significant candidate for this job. But just like we always do when we have a head coaching opening, we will do a national search and we will hire the absolute best fit.”
