Mark Helfrich on coaching: 'It's not who can scream the loudest'

Dec 31, 2014

The music in the football complex is too loud to yell at them, anyway. If you're wondering how a relatively quiet and completely chill personality like Mark Helfrich gets results in a world of screaming head football coaches, take notes on this clip:

Helfrich, a native Oregonian and college football coach for 17 years now, has a philosophy that developing a quality football program isn't about yelling, it's about teaching. And while the Ducks have have arrived on the national stage as the preeminent team of nuance and freshness, Helfrich was quick to attribute recent success to the tenure of the football staff.

"There's guys that have been there for 20, 25, 30 years, and they love to be a part of Oregon football," said Helfrich. "Being a part of it is very special in our city. We don't have the Lakers and the Clippers and all that other stuff going on."
