23 Pac-12 Women’s Soccer stars to appear in 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

Jun 24, 2023

CHICAGO, Ill. – 23 current and former Pac-12 Women’s Soccer players were announced to nine different 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup this past month.

On the United States Women’s National Soccer team, the conference is represented by nine athletes, the most of any conference in the country with representatives from California, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington State. With seven of the nine making their World Cup debut, the newcomers will include 2019 National Champions Naomi Girma and Sophia Smith and MAC Herman Semifinalists, Ashley Sanchez and Alana Cook. Kelly O’Hara of Stanford and Alex Morgan of California, the only conference returnees, represent two of the three most decorated staples of the U.S. National World Cup teams, with both joining a list of only 12 women in U.S National Team History to be selected to four or more teams.

With a place on eight additional World Cup rosters, the conference’s remaining 14 athletes represent Australia, Canada, Colombia, Ireland, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway and the Philippines.

Headlined by current Sun Devil, and Arizona State’s sole World Cup participant, Gabi Rennie, New Zealand’s roster will also include three former conference members in California’s Betsy Hassett and Daisy Cleverley and Stanford’s Ali Riley.

Canada, Nigeria and the Philippines all boast two Conference players each. 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Finalist Jessie Fleming and USC Junior Simi Awujo will join Canada in their fight for the World Cup while decorated Pac-12 forward Ifeoma Onumonu of California and 2016 USC National Champion Ashleigh Plumtre will have a place on Nigeria’s roster. Former Trojan Dominique Randle and former Husky Jessika Cowart will represent the Philippines.

Australia (Teagan Micah, UCLA), Colombia (Angela Baron, Arizona), Ireland (Kyra Carusa, Stanford) and Norway (Guro Bergsvand, California) are the final four World Cup rosters to feature Pac-12 student-athletes in the 2023 World Cup.

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup runs from July 20-Aug. 20 in 10 stadiums and nine host cities, five in Australia and four in New Zealand. This will be the first Women’s World Cup featuring 32 nations, up from 24 in the previous two tournaments, and all 64 games will be broadcast across the U.S. live in English on FOX (29 matches) and FOX Sports 1 (35 matches) and on tablets and mobile devices through the FOX Sports App. All games will also be broadcast in Spanish on Telemundo (33 matches) and the Universo cable network (31 matches). All matches will also be streamed in Spanish on Peacock.
