Golfers Claim 7th In Own Stevinson Invite

Mar 24, 2003

STEVINSON, Calif. - The University of Colorado men's golf team rallied to finish in seventh place here Tuesday, in perhaps what was a "swing" meet for the Buffaloes in relation to its NCAA chances, as the fifth annual CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational came to a close.

Pacific turned in the best single round of the tournament, a six-under par 282 in the final round, catapulting from third after two rounds to first in the standings in winning with an 866 team sore. Kansas State, the co-leader after one round and the leader by itself after two rounds finished second, six strokes back at 872.

The win by Pacific snapped a Kansas stranglehold on the title here, as the Jayhawks had won the first four events, though all were close: KU won by three, eight, five and one stroke, respectively.

Colorado was in sixth after the first round, slipped to ninth after 36 holes before rallying with the third best score of the final round, a 1-over 289, to finish seventh with an 881 team score. The Buffs have finished second here twice, and now have three seventh place efforts in the five-year history of the meet.

The key here was how CU fared against several NCAA District Five rivals, as the tournament was designed by CU head coach Mark Simpson to have largely a district meet in near-certain good weather conditions. Only 11 strokes had separated the third through 12th place teams after two rounds, with the Buffs in the thick of that quagmire, so CU did have an opportunity to improve its standing and thus its chances for a berth into the NCAA Championships. Of the nine district foes here the Buffs competed against, Colorado defeated six, improving to 8-15-2 against district teams. But losing to Wichita State, which finished third, by six strokes, and to Missouri by one likely have placed CU in a precarious position in regard to the NCAA Championships.

"I didn't want to have any scared swings out there, because when the wind is affecting the ball and you make a 'scared' swing, it worsens the effect of the ball," Hanson said in rebounding from an 81 Monday to a 2-under 70 in the final round. "So I went out there and played aggressively."

"I was very proud of the guys; they shot a good round on a very tough golf course," Simpson said of what turned out to be CU's second best single round of the season. "They were all gutting it out, and gave it all they had. To shoot 289 in the last round is a real positive sign for the team.

"My assessment right now is that we're on the bubble for the NCAA's," Simpson surmised. "Therefore, we need to continue to improve, to show improvement in our remaining two tournaments before they make the selections. The challenge is that we won't see Wichita State again, since they're 1-0 against us, and we're trailing both Kansas and Missouri by 3-1, though Mizzou has us by seven strokes total. We need to focus in on the conference championship and have a strong showing there, which I know will grab the committee's eye. We have some tough work ahead of us, hopefully the weather back home will cooperate, and we can play the rest of the way like we did today."

Freshman Edward McGlasson paced the Buffaloes in home state, as the Orange County native turned in a 72-74-72-218 scorecard to tie for 14th on the 7,199-yard, par-72 Stevinson Ranch Golf Club layout. Another freshman and Pasadena native, Blake Moore shot even par Tuesday, and combined with junior Jeff Hanson's 2-under 70, CU's low score of the meet, the Buffs were on their way to a good score.

"That's a sign of a quality player, to have a bad round like Jeff did yesterday and to bounce back the way he did," Simpson said. "Edward and Blake, a couple of freshmen, did great work for us today as well. It's what we need to do."

Even freshman Michael Feuerstein got into the act; competing as an individual, which meant his score did not count toward CU's team total, he shot a 71 in the final round, including 33 on the front nine, one of only four 33s recorded in the meet.

Senior Stephen Carroll shot a 75 to finish with a 219 total, tying him for 19th. It marked just the second time this year the Buffs had two finishers in the top 20.

Pacific's Matt Hansen cruised to a six-shot victory, carding a final round 68 for a 208 total, tying former CU golfer Ben Portie's tournament low score set just last year.

The Buffs are idle until April 11-12, when they will travel to Tempe to compete in the Arizona State Sun Devil Thunderbird Invitational for the first time since 1996. That will be the final tune-up ahead of the Big 12 Conference Championships in Tulsa later in Apri
