CU No. 9 Seed In Big 12 Tourney

Mar 6, 2008

BOULDER - The pairings for the 2008 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship are set and as expected Colorado will be the tournament's No. 9 seed and face No. 8 Iowa State in a first round game on Tuesday, March 11, at 11 a.m. MST at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

The winner of Tuesday's game will play No. 1 seed and Big 12 regular season champion Kansas State on Wednesday, March 12, at 11 a.m. MST. Iowa State swept the regular season series from the Buffs winning 84-77 in double overtime in Boulder on Jan. 13 and 65-45 in Ames on Jan. 30.

Guaranteed its first winning season in four years, Colorado is 16-13 overall and finished the Big 12 slate alone in ninth place at 5-11. Iowa State and Texas tied for seventh in the Big 12 standings at 7-9. The Longhorns won the tiebreaker and gained the tournament's No. 7 seed by virtue of their 59-56 win over the Cyclones in Austin on Jan. 16.

First round games will be televised by the Metro Sports cable network. Fox Sports Net will televise rest of the tournament from the quarterfinals through the title game on Saturday, March 15. All of CU's games will be broadcast live by KKZN AM 760.

Colorado has been the No. 9 seed once before, in 1999, losing the first round game to Kansas State, 55-51. The No. 9 seed as actually had the upper hand in previous tournaments, holding a 7-4 mark in first round play. Last season Colorado, as the No. 8 seed, broke a four-game win streak by the No. 9 seed in the 8-9 game with a 71-67 win over Texas Tech.

The Buffaloes, 8-10 all-time in the Big 12 Championship, are 1-2 against Iowa State league tournament play. The last meeting came in 2005 -- the last time the tournament was at Municipal Auditorium -- as the No. 5 seed Cyclones needed a last-second 3-pointer to defeat the No. 12 Buffs 64-62.
