Five Buffs Named To Academic All-Big 12 Team

IRVING, Texas
 - Five Buffaloes have been named to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Teams, announced today by the league offices.

 

Senior Alex Buth led the Buffs as the only first team selection while seniors Lauren Schaefer, Amber Sutherland and Ashley Venhorst were named to the second team along with junior Kaitlyn Burkett.

 

Members of the first team consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA and have played in 60 percent of the matches.

 

Buth was named to the first team for the fourth straight year. The
East Grand Rapids, Mich., native is an eight-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll. Buth carries a 3.393 GPA and is a business major with an emphasis in marketing. Buth was named to the Big 12 Chick-Fil-A Community of Champions earlier this season. She is averaging 2.81 kills, 2.89 digs and 0.76 blocks per set while hitting at a .215 clip.

 

This is the second honor for Schaefer and Burkett as both were named to the second team last year. Burkett, a
Colorado Springs
native, is majoring in communications. She has directed the Buffs to a .191 attack percentage this season while averaging 9.82 assists per set. Burkett also adds 0.87 kills, 2.11 digs and 0.58 blocks per set.

 

Schaefer, a middle blocker, is majoring in business with an emphasis in accounting. The
Mountain View, Calif. native is averaging 2.13 kills and 0.86 blocks per set and is leading the Buffs with a .349 hitting percentage which ranks sixth in the Big 12.

           

            Sutherland and VenHorst are receiving this honor for the first time in their careers. Sutherland, an outside hitter from Glenwood Springs, Colo., is majoring in sociology. She is averaging 2.27 kills, 2.38 digs and 0.30 blocks per set after redshirting the 2007 season. Bettendorf, Iowa, native, Ashley Venhorst is an English major. The defensive specialist adds 1.66 digs per set.

 

The Buffs (12-13, 6-10 Big 12) are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 18 against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. The match is set for a 5:30 p.m. start.
