Kipp And Stewart Tagged as Athletes Of The Week

BOULDER - Colorado athletes Shalaya Kipp (cross country) and Rodney Stewart (football) were chosen as CU's Athletes of the Week for Sept. 26 through Oct. 2.

Kipp, a sophomore from Salt Lake City, Utah, won her first career cross country race at the Rocky Mountain Shootout on Saturday. Her time of 20 minutes, 29 seconds in the 5.8k course was good enough to tie the 10th best time in course history.

Her finish was also a personal best (she ran a 20:42 race in 2010), and she beat the runner-up in the race by 27 seconds. Kipp's finish also helped the Buffs claim the team title over Wyoming. The CU women's cross country team is now ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Stewart, a tailback from Westerville, Ohio, also had a career day in CU's heart-breaking 31-27 loss to Washington State on Saturday. "Speedy" enjoyed the 15th 100-yard game of his career and is now sitting in second place only to Eric Bieniemy (22). His 3,156 rushing yards also passed Rashaan Salaam (3,057) for second place on CU's all-time rushing yards list, and he passed Bieniemy into first place in all-time rushing attempts with 718 (Bieniemy had 699 from 1987-1990).

Stewart also claimed the title for the most receiving yards ever by a running back at CU with 736 (breaking the mark of 725 set by Herchell Troutman from 1994-97).

Overall, Stewart had 26 rushes for 132 yards, one rushing TD, one reception for 34 yards and 278 all-purpose yards. His rushing TD was the first by a CU running back this season, and his 278 all-purpose yards were the 11th most in a single game in CU history.

Also nominated this week were Kristin Coleman (women's golf), Kerra Schroeder (volleyball), Anne Stuller (soccer), Kevin Kring (men's golf) and Richard Medina (cross country).

Coleman, a sophomore, finished tied for 12th at the 32nd Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational and helped the Buffs rebound to a sixth place team finish. The 12th place finish is the third highest of her career and fifth career top 20 finish. She shot a 73-76-73-222 on the par 73 course.

Schroeder averaged 5.33 kills per set and 5.67 kills per set as CU went 0-2 against No. 5 USC and No. 2 UCLA. She also contributed eight digs, two blocks and one ace in the two matches and hit .213 overall. Schroeder totaled 32 kills on 94 attacks.

Stuller scored two goals on seven shots over the weekend as Colorado went 0-1-1 to Arizona and Arizona State. Stuller scored both of CU's goals in its 2-2 double overtime tie with Arizona. She tied teammate Amy Barczuk in most shots for the game (6) and both of her goals were unassisted. Stuller is now ranked fourth in the Pac-12 Conference in shots (35) and fifth in shots per game (3.18). She is tied with Barczuk for most goals on the team (3).

Kring shot CU's best round of the UNM Tucker Invitational in the final round and helped the Buffs claim a ninth place team finish in the 16-school event. He closed with an even-par 72, and tied 24th overall with a 7-over 223 finish. Kring had four birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys during the tournament.

Medina, a senior, won his first career cross country race at the Rocky Mountain Shootout.? He defeated teammate Andy Wacker for first place and finished in 24 minutes, 39 seconds on the 8k course. This is a significant accomplishment, as this race was Medina's first in almost two seasons (he redshirted during the 2010 season).
