Freshmen Rack Up Goals At Junior Championships

Incoming Cal freshman Anna Illes scored a team-high three goals and fellow freshman Dora Antal added another but Hungary fell to Russia 10-8 during preliminary round play at the World Junior Championships in Volos, Greece on Tuesday.

Another incoming Cal freshman, Roser Tarrago, registered a team-best two goals but Spain lost to Greece, 8-5. Meanwhile, Cal junior Tiera Schroeder did not score but the United States defeated Italy, 8-5.

Illes’ first goal came in the second quarter and tied the game at 3-3. She scored once in the third period and once in the fourth as the Hungarians attempted to come back. Antal’s goal came in the third period and at the time cut Russia’s advantage to 5-4.

Both of Tarrago’s goals came in the second half after Spain had fallen behind, 8-5.

The United States is now 2-0 in preliminary round play and will meet New Zealand on Wednesday. Hungary and Spain are each 1-1. The Hungarians play Brazil on Wednesday while the Spaniards are off.
