MORAGA, Calif. – California senior Campbell Johnson will face freshman teammate Filip Bergevi, his doubles partner, in Monday’s quarterfinals in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional at Saint Mary’s, as a total of three Golden Bears advanced in singles and two Cal teams advanced in doubles on Sunday.
The second-seeded and 41st-ranked Johnson beat Stanford’s ninth-seeded Maciek Romanowicz in the round of 16, 6-2, 7-5, while the 17th-seeded Bergevi beat Oregon’s eighth-seeded Robin Cambier, 6-3, 6-4, on Sunday. The Bears face each other at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
The ninth-seeded Andre Goransson, another Cal freshman, topped Stanford’s 17th-seeded Trey Strobel on Sunday, 7-5, 6-2, to set up a quarterfinal with Stanford’s Anthony Tsodikov also at 10:30 am on Monday.
The sixth-seeded team of Johnson and Bergevi bested the ninth-seeded Saint Mary’s duo of Tuomas Manner and Joakim Norstrom, 8-4. The Bears will play the UC Davis team of Adam Levie and Alec Adamson at 9 a.m. in Monday’s quarterfinals.
Cal’s ninth-seeded tandem of juniors Chase Melton and Gregory Bayane will also play a pair of Aggies – Brett Bacharach and James Wade at 9 a.m. on Monday, after upsetting Portland’s fifth-seeded Alex Ferrero/Ratan Gill, 8-7, 7-6(5), on Sunday.
The regional ends on Tuesday.
