BERKELEY – Cal libero Maddy Kerr was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced.
Kerr tied a school record with a whopping 33 digs in the Bears’ five-set win over No. 20 Oregon on Friday. It was the second-highest single-match total in the Pac-12 this season and only the 10th time a Cal player has ever reached the 30-dig mark in a match.
Kerr followed it up with 12 digs in Cal’s five-set win over Oregon State on Sunday.
Kerr, from San Diego, ranks ninth in the Pac-12 with an average of 3.54 digs per set.
This is the first weekly honor for a Cal player this season and the program’s fourth-ever Freshman of the Week selection (the award was started in 2011). Lillian Schonewise last received the honor on Oct. 24, 2011.
The Bears (13-6, 6-4 Pac-12) host No. 4 USC on Friday night at 6 p.m. and UCLA on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Both matches will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
