Nov 7, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Rico Hoey of USC has been named the Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Month for October, the Pac-12 announced today.

The freshman from Rancho Cucamunga, Calif., led the Trojans to a pair of top ten finishes, including a runner-up showing at the Gifford Collegiate Championship at Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Beach, Calif.

Hoey capped off the fall season with his first tournament victory, shooting 8-under (68-66-68) to edge teammate Anthony Paolucci by one stroke for top honors at the Gifford Collegiate. Earlier in the month, he finished tied for fourth at the U.S. Collegiate Championship at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga., with a 4-under 212 (70-71-71), as the Trojans finished in ninth place in a field that included 10 teams ranked among the Top 25 in the latest Golfweek rankings.

He shot under par in each round of both tournaments and becomes the first Trojan to post three sub-70 rounds in an event since senior Jeffrey Kang did it as a sophomore at the Amer Ari Invitational (Feb. 1-3, 2012).

Also nominated for golfer of the month honors were Jeremy Paul, Fr., COLORADO; David Fink, Sr., OREGON STATE; Patrick Rodgers, Jr., STANFORD; Preston Valder, Jr., UCLA; Trevor Simsby, Sr., WASHINGTON.
