Tyler Collier Signs NLI With Men’s Golf

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Tyler Collier has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Oregon State men’s golf program for the 2014-15 season, head coach Jon Reehoorn announced on Wednesday.
Collier, a native of Chico, Calif., attends Pleasant Valley High School where he is a four-year letterman in golf and three-time Eastern Athletic League Most Valuable Player.
“Tyler is an individual we identified early in the recruiting process, and as I got to know him, it became apparent he was exactly the type of individual we needed to be part of our program and represent Oregon State University,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “His accomplishments on the course speak for themselves, but the work ethic, desire to be great, and his ability to overcome adversity when it is thrown his way are a few intangibles that have me very excited.”
In 2013 Collier qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur and advanced to Sectionals of the U.S. Open qualifying. He represented the JGANC (Junior Golf Association Northern California) at the Junior America’s Cup and Eddie Hogan Cup, and won the JGANC/NCGA Nor-Cal Players Championship. A year earlier he won the Veritas World Junior and finished fourth at the Eddie Hogan Cup.
“The strength of Tyler’s game is in his length off the tee and ball striking, but he also has very good touch with the putter,” Reehoorn said. “In addition to his success at the junior level, this past summer Tyler showed that his game is ready to make the transition from junior golf to college golf by qualifying for the California State Amateur and advancing to the Sectionals of U.S. Open qualifying on courses setup similar to what we see at each event.”
Collier chose Oregon State because of the “great atmosphere along with the two best coaches in college golf.” Ironically, his biggest athletic thrill to date doesn’t involve golf but was “scoring 26 points and beating crosstown rival Chico High in basketball.”
